I have been working at PetSmart

    Pros

Amazing, wonderful staff! Especially at this particular store.
The company/CEO does a lot of great things, and I can imagine that the people on top really do mean to be caring
Room for growth within the company... Up to a point of course

    Cons

A lot of distance and disparity between head office and store. Sometimes it feels like they've never stepped in to a store before.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try walking a day in your employees shoes. You demand a lot and give little. Yet many of your employees work really hard and still struggle. They are passionate and caring and hard working. They want the best for your company too...give them a little back. They may not be shareholders, but they are the back bone of your business.

I have been working at PetSmart

    Pros

Get to meet great people and customers are usually willing to chat and hear suggestions
Pets! If you don't love seeing different types of animals, this is not the place for you
Management did uphold company policies and would defend them- very little undermining in front of customers

    Cons

    Managers are not very empathetic
Will hire you only for part time with a very large fluctuation in hours (work 5 hrs one week, 32 hrs the next week) if you are not in the Salon or aren't a manager
Expect you to revolve your life around working there, I've been guilt tripped into working more hours when I've had prior engagements (if they just scheduled me then things would be easier to accommodate)
Management gets really pissy when people have other jobs that need accommodation
Managers act like they are doing you a favor when they give you an extra 3 hour shift in your week
Very little positive feedback, most people there do not get regular positive feedback from management, only directly from customers
If you offend management, they will cut your hours in retaliation
Forget about having issues resolved by going to the DM or HR. They do not care about store issues and will not resolve them if your managers fail to. They only care about harassment and abuse, embezzlement, and stealing. They will NOT help you with any other store issues (i.e. managers cutting your hours in retaliation)

The company is trying to create more money for shareholders by cutting down employee hours and removing positions. They are trying to do WAY more with WAY less. This is a part time job for those in college/university but do not expect to ever get a full time position unless you are in the Salon. If you want to make money, aim for being a groomer. During profitable seasons, some of the groomers are taking in more than the managers. If you want a part time position aim for cashier, pet trainer, pet care, or stocker.

The only reason I'm still here is because I genuinely adore the customers and their pets.

    Pros

No one from the office visited stores in the west!!

    Cons

No leadership or support. ... don't ask HR for help, she will brush you off. DM... what DM?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the trunover at all levels. Why is this happening in the west? If you are not careful you will see third party intervention, this helps no one!

I worked at PetSmart full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Fun job. Work with animals all day and meet interesting people.

    Cons

No accountability to staff or management. Drama everywhere drama. Upper management ignores complaints from staff and other management. Harassment and intimidation is considered acceptable, along with flat out bullying. Company HR is little to no help in the situation.

Limited/Poor Training. Company has a huge overdone training process that even tests you after you are done. None of what you learn is useful in your job and even your final test is a pass no matter what.

    Too many manipulative personalities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider investigating problems before picking a scapegoat.

I worked at PetSmart full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The discount on pet supplies and food is great. The job was really fun and pretty laid back as long as everything was taken care of. It was great to interact with all the dogs and cats that stayed in the hotel. Performance review was taken care of without asking and feedback on performance was given.

    Cons

Working holidays was hard, and it would have been great if the position paid more than minimum wage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to be flexible with schedule, and reward hard working employees.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Developing close relationships with people of similar interests/backgrounds.
    Paid slightly above minimum wage.

There is truly very little benefit to working at a PetSmart location.

    Cons

Overall poor management: poor middle-management on multiple levels that reduces productivity, conflicting directions from said poor middle-management, complete lack of respect towards employees and even managers at lower levels than store manager level, accomplishing insurmountable feats daily (hourly) even without taking your legally obligated 15 minute break

Horrible flexibility: no one respects your availability and only expects you to perform at peak levels with no rewards/benefits

This location is absolutely atrocious and if you are considering employment at the Pickering location, I strongly suggest looking elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to care about your jobs and your employees. Treat people with respect and you will get respect in return. Don't intimidate people into working shifts they don't want to/don't have availability for, and don't penalize people for working when they absolutely cannot.

If fired from this location, there are definite grounds for wrongful dismissal, based on how poor management is performed.

    Pros

Easy, has benefits, has great rules and regulations if the damn location follows them.

    Cons

They didn't follow the rules, cruel to the animals, sold them them as live feed.
