I have been working at Patterson Companies full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Company cares about customers and employees. Great way to start or return to the medical arena, but also a great long term career for the disciplined person. Great starting salary and reimbursements plus uncapped commissions.

    Cons

De-centralized, which means some branches are not as good as others. Too much of the training is up to the individual, it takes too long to get all the training completed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a better standard for training outside of the 2 weeks at home office. Regions should have a trainer that goes into systematic information, 2 weeks is not enough and people do not get consistent training.

I have been working at Patterson Companies full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great team to work with in a market that positively impacts people's and animal's health. It's also been my experience that the company is very flexible with work schedules. The fact that they participate in an ESOP is also a bonus.

    Cons

I've found that my base salary is below the market average for my team and myself. The do provide other benefits for your total compensation but many use your base salary as target.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Investing resources in areas besides IT and Sales would allow us to be a more effective company and possibly reach our growth goals more quickly.

I have been working at Patterson Companies full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Patterson is stable and loyal to their employees. Patterson has fair but certainly not generous or competitive benefits.

    Cons

There is no room for professional growth at Patterson. There is no talk of career paths or succession planning. If you want to find a place to hide for the rest of your career, this is it. If you want a place to shine and be challenged, look somewhere else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company talks a lot about their "culture" but I doubt anyone could define what that means.

Relaxed environment. Some positions filled with very strong people, many other positions filled with very weak people.

I have been working at Patterson Companies full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Pressure from management is minimal
    Flexible hours for salary employees
    PTO is pretty decent
    Laid back culture

    Cons

Lack of drive from most employees
    Lackluster pay
Untrained middle management with mediocre to downright bad leadership and people skills
Company culture and values are not as advertised

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn the ins and outs of management. Challenge people more. If someone makes a mistake let them know. Stop promoting people to their level of incompetence...A great technical person may not make the best manager.

    Pros

Fairly relaxed office atmosphere. Nice cafeteria for lunches.

    Cons

A little to corporate with the mandatory slacks and button down shirts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let people wear what they want, people are going to want to work harder when they're comfortable.

I worked at Patterson Companies full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I enjoyed working in a team environment and had good training before I started working on the products. Flexible working conditions were nice.

    Cons

-No incentive to be productive. I was a top producer, got the same bonus as everyone else in the division.
-Was frequently lied to by management regarding structural changes to my department and the department's pay structure in order to keep me as an employee.
    -No opportunities for advancement
    -Coffee provided was terrible
    -Low pay
    -Bad benefits
-After leaving, learned that managers have a different bonus structure that gives them a percentage of their salary. Why are they rewarded when I bust my butt and get nothing?
-Also after leaving, found out that other companies have significantly better perks and benefits available.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to reward top performers or they will continue to flee the company.

I have been working at Patterson Companies full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Managers seem to actually care about the employees and do anything to help out.
    Training is VERY extensive
Overall attitude is great with other employees
Coworkers are very friendly and willing to help out

    Cons

1' of snow/ice over 65 cars in the ditch in a 20 mile span of I-70 around Effingham, still required to come into work. That's really the only complaint I have so far

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the great work

I have been working at Patterson Companies full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

A lot of promise with desired ITIL process adoption and good intentions intent to build out new IT operations services across business lines.

    Cons

A lot of decision making authority granted to stale IT managers or those with limited IT experience. Be ready to stand your ground, demand compensation upon start and be prepared for weak performance/merit increase.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please void cronyism and turn IT around to something in can be.

I worked at Patterson Companies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Constant performance indicators so you know where you stand
Lots of small raise opportunities and performance reviews in the first year
Full visibility of pay structure (pay for performance)
Management is supportive of improving employee performance
Non-union warehouse that supports cross training opportunities
Non competitive environment that supports teamwork.

    Cons

Employees cheat to make their performance look better, management is aware but doesn't do anything to fix the issue.
Outdated, old technology with nothing new in sight
Upper Management listens to employee ideas and then pitches them as their own ideas, rather than giving credit where credit is due.
Retention rates are high, if you want to be promoted or move forward, you are out of luck!
Bullying is prominent and management does nothing to stop it, the people who are bullies have been around for a long time and "that is just the way they are and everyone needs to conform and deal with it."
No opportunities for raises outside of the performance review structure, after the first year the raise opportunities are few and far between.
Start at minimum wage, not very many exceptions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A lot of intelligent, worthy people go through your warehouses. Support them and help them to grow. Reward those employees with the ability to grow with the company. The company offers tuition reimbursement but no discernible reward is given for the employees that receive associate or bachelors degrees. There are very few women in the management hierarchy, that needs to be changed as well!

I have been working at Patterson Companies full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits but really...thats all.

    Cons

They don't really care abotu their employees or promoting within. They would rather hire a kid straight out of college that is hungry and will work for beans. The turn-around rate is insane and no one really cares. You are just a # in a sea of people. They haven't given our raises in years and some people are actually making less now than they did when the started years ago. Management is too busy sucking up to Corporate to really care about their teamates. Every man for himself mentality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees fairly and get off that corporate Teet.
