I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Working at the General Office there were plenty of opportunities to attend company events and get free food, tickets to events, etc.
People in my department were professional and polite.
    Flexible hours for my position.

    Cons

Many contractors were unable to continue in their positions due to budget constraints. There were always new people in and out.
The office is very quiet and it is difficult to get to know others that work on the same floor as you if they are not in your department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the short term contract policy. It doesn't make sense to lose good workers because they need to take a 6 month break after working 18 months with the company.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    • Competitive Salary
    • Excellent Health, Retirement Benefits
    • Full Relocation Package
    • Retirement of 20% of the employees over the next 5 years leads to a great short term opportunity for advancement

    Cons

    • Too Much Chaos due to Change and Initiatives
    • HR too slow to deal with Salary Inequities
    • Company initiates changes for the sake of change
    • Work Life Balance is out of Balance in most Departments
    • Executives listen to MBA Interns over Seasoned Employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don’t be so hasty to cancel an Initiative in mid operation. Just saying that it is no longer an initiative does not mean that it stopped; only that the employees assigned no longer get credit. It is agreed that there are too many initiatives, but the best way to handle that would be with an Initiative Review Committee and a patient Work down of the ones that would be deselected.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Company values, work atmopsphere, work ethic:
I found employees across the company very professional, collaborative, and genuinely willing to do the right thing.
Hours of the corporate office are great. Benefits are excellent, and a pension plan, salaries can be very good as they want to retain the best people possible for the HQ office.

    Cons

Conservative and sometimes a very stiff work atmosphere, executives make employees nervous as they have a great degree of influence. That sounds normal but it can feel very old school and a politically distracted environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing all you can to be state of the art in delivery of gas and elecrtric energy.
Keep benchmarking with the best energy companies in the nation and the world.
Show the nation what a california utility can be and should be.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay, good benefits, pension, good location, enthusiastic coworkers.

    Cons

A whole group of people have little actual business understanding. They only know how to compare numbers and ask for variance explanations. The budget process is ridiculous. Strategic Business Management doesn't live in the real world. They need to go on rotation and understand how things really work. More and more meetings, more conference calls and getting less and less work done. Upper management screws ups and the employees end up paying the price trying to make people trust us and want to do business with us. No one can make a decision anymore. Layer upon layer of bureaucracy - manager sign off, director sign off, VP sign off, executive VP sign off ... Serious lack of trust in decision making. Too many people with MBA's run the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Does anyone do real work anymore? Less process, fewer sign offs. Let people use their minds and do their jobs. You don't realize how much time is spent reporting, on conference calls, checking and getting sign offs. Everyone is trying to add value. We could cut the workforce by 10% if someone looked closely at all the redundant non productive work.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - good pay+bonus
    - good benefits
    - interesting work
    - flexible work schedule
    - systems/application has direct impact on fellow employee safety and customer satisfaction.

    Cons

    - like any big organization
    - challenging time for the utility
    - some employees are not engaged (in plant retired) and working with them is difficult
    - still hanging on to "this is the way we have always done it"
    - not a lot of new development, buy mostly package solutions.
    - too much focus on "capital" projects and not enough investment in exploring alternatives to old problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Listen to the new employees with experience in other organizations, its not enough to bring in a "new leader" and expect change throughout the organization
    - Make an effort to encourage and hang onto new employees, make sure they do not get discouraged too early and leave before they make a contribution.
    - Do an honest self assessment of the quality of your middle management, and clean the obvious dead wood.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

They truly support career development and promote from within. They also provide ample funding for education. In addition, they provide excellent benefits.

    Cons

HR was very disorganized. They are very good at identifying that they need to change, however, they are not to identify steps to bring about the change. Also, the older workforce is resistant to change. I also felt that management needed leadership development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Identify actionable steps to bring about change and see them through. Also, reach out to those in the lower rankings. Leadership has no idea regarding director performance.
