Great for Retail

Store Manager (Current Employee)
Nashville, TN (US)

I have been working at OfficeMax full-time for more than 5 years

ProsYou control how much you work (min 45 hrs) by how good of a job you do. Fair pay, good benefits, generous time off.

ConsUncertainty of many facets due to merger. Do a great job and this should be a small concern

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Legacy company great to work for...Pre-merger

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at OfficeMax for more than 8 years

ProsPre-merger: Great new innovative way of thinking to drive business in a dying sector.... The people were very passionate & hardworking. The energy and sense of ownership was thorough out. Executive management articulated the missions and employees were reward on their achievement.

ConsPost-merger the morale and mixing the two cultures take a hard hit driving employee morale to tank...

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you could but you can't the merger and communication efforts could have been handled a little different. There are countless studies out their to address mergers and acquisitions. Issues such as:

• Uncertainty about the future organizational direction
• Feelings of loss of previous organizational culture
• Uncertainty about personal job security
• Perceptions of lack of leadership credibility
• Feelings of confusion due to a lack of communication
• Survivor guilt due to downsizing of other employees
• Perceptions of increased job stress and workload

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend

It was a fun culture and product mix, don't think I realized just how good it was until I had gone to other retailers.

General Manager (Former Employee)
Algonquin, IL (US)

I worked at OfficeMax full-time for more than 10 years

ProsI started as a part time stocker and worked all my way up to Store Manager. Took a while but it was a good feeling seeing the hard work pay off.
Time off was almost never an issue. Very flexible for me.
I loved my District Managers throughout the years. They actually cared for their employees.
The staff always got along well. You really cared about your staff.

ConsDifferent stores seemed to run differently then one another, (if that makes sense) Almost like one thing was ok in one store, but not another. Took some adjustment.
Now that they've merged with Office Depot, I can only imagine how difficult its going to be getting promoted if stores close being too close to one another, etc.

Advice to Senior ManagementI love office supplies and want to see this company succeed. Maybe reinvent "Back To School" to make it more of a destination spot like it used to be before Target and Walmart really came in to play for that season.

The organization does not have a strong direction after the acquisition by Office Depot.

Inside Sales (Former Employee)
Peru, IL (US)

I worked at OfficeMax full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat people, fun work environment, exceptional products and services.

ConsFading industry, closing lots of stores and employee moral is quickly declining.

Advice to Senior ManagementCorporate needs to define who they are and select a direction- are they going to compete primarily online and have stores in major metropolitan areas or just try to be everything to everyone.
