I have been working at Novartis full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great people, not too much bureaucracy, good system for identifying and promoting talents

    Cons

Promotion sometimes based on being nice rather than being valuable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More consistent promotion guidelines and policy.

I have been working at Novartis

    Pros

The pay, products and benefits are solid

    Cons

Leadership changes are constant. Every new leader then tries to establish a new direction with their stamp on a new a new culture that is never realized. Decisions are erratic and respect for reps is not great. 5 layoffs/re-orgs in last six years...

Novartis Hyderabad ( shared services) Very stagnant and visionless set-up. Adopting KPO culture at a rapid pace.

I have been working at Novartis full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

stress-free work; work-life balance; pay just above industry standard to start with

    Cons

There is no training process in place and they mostly depend on lateral experienced hiring to get work done. No proper knowledge management process in place. HR team is largely external contract employees and there is no process in place to look after skill / career development of employees.

In past have hired from IITs for entry level positions. Even these bright individuals could not really make anything out of their stay in the company mostly because the learning curve is quite flat here.

Leadership is largely old people who have spent 5+ years with company. Newer hiring in higher management is from few smaller pharma research firms in India who bring with themselves the KPO culture.

They are targeting optimization of money and man-power in Hyderabad office which means lesser budget allocation from HQ and more work for associates.

Financial year of Jan-Dec but salary given out in April. >> Means you wait extra 4 months for your bonus.

One has to spend minimum 2 year in a role to be eligible for promotion > major source of frustration for newer employees as they are hired at one level behind older employees. While most older employees would have been promoted to Sr. Analyst role in 1.5 years, newer employee with less than 3 year experience are hired as Analyst.

My advice > Students of premier institutes like IITs should stay away from entry level or fresher entry here. Pharma in itself is a very different industry and this Novartis set up is not an ideal start to anyone's career. It will surely slow down your growth even if you are initially paid better than other companies coming to campus. Freshers should head to ZS associates if at all they are looking to get into Pharma industry.

I worked at Novartis full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The Basel campus is an excellent place to work: on-site gym, several restaurants (although all are pricey), and interesting architecture and art.

    Cons

Since Novartis has sold off several divisions and undergone some changes in finance processes, there aren't a lot of opportunities for professional growth. Competition for jobs is intense, so look elsewhere if you're trying to move up the ladder. Also, if you are a woman with children in Switzerland, be aware that there is a strong cultural bias against hiring women for jobs that are perceived to require a high level of commitment.

I worked at Novartis full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits are good, but in practice work life balance occurs only to the operational level.

    Cons

The salary is lower compared to the market and the demand of working for managers is high due to insufficient structure. The correction of salaries for managers is not aligned with transfer of annual inflation and are usually lagged year by year. When the managers feel exhausted, they leave Novartis Brazil, even after many years with the company. There are no investments in training for managers, regardless of the requirement for development the team. There is no trade off for the managers, the benefits not outweigh the costs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice is to rethink the economy at any cost, and look at the managerial level with care because usually add much value to the company.

I have been working at Novartis full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Not much, other than getting to use the Alcon campus gym and cafeteria

    Cons

Shared Service Center is a complete mess. There is no standardization and really low employee moral. Everyone is depressed and always complaining. Open work environment with one small 2 foot cube wall. Since there are no offices, there are a million meetings and conference calls a day. I never knew if I would get laid off the next day due to "Finance Transformation" and "restructuring." They laid off employees left and right from Alcon. Its in a nasty part of Fort Worth in a factory area. No restaurants or shops around, except the various strip clubs and ghetto houses around. They also don't believe in giving good reviews. If you doing amazing, they still refuse to give anything more than a meets expectations review. They have this huge process where all the managers go in a room and calibrate reviews to move them up or down. I only took the job because I was unemployed at the time. About half of the people working there were in the same situation. Personally, Im not that big of a fan of diversity.... Lets just say, they hire their brothas, sistas, and cousins.

    Quit laying people off
