I worked at Novartis Pharmaceuticals as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Good work-life balance. Exciting pipeline. There's also the desire to be innovative and try out new approaches even if they're not being used elsewhere in the pharmaceutical industry.

    Cons

Broken processes. Too much time in the marketing area is spent in ensuring compliance with FDA regulations. I think smarter processes can result not only in a high level of compliance but also in more time to do the core parts of the job. Also, rolling layoffs introduce constant uncertainty into the workplace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

See how much time your people are wasting on bureaucratic tasks and improve processes to address the situation. Also, pick an organizational structure and stay with it for awhile.

I worked at Novartis Pharmaceuticals full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Lots of opportunities for development if you are the driver of it. Very good benefits. Still some good people at the company.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic, structured. Two components to performance management. 2 ways: Objective (sales results) and Competencies (Values & Behaviors) Almost impossible to exceed competency expectations. Not enough internal support anymore, and what is there is mostly outsourced. Lots of leadership changes. Most of the senior leaders have no experience as a rep/manager/director

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Not sure it would help.

I worked at Novartis Pharmaceuticals as a contractor for more than 3 years

    Pros

I found the atmosphere to be professional, encouraging, and supportive. I did not experience any time/energy wasted on "office politics" or jockeying for position. I was given the resources I needed to perform my duties, and I found the work to be stimulating and challenging.

    Cons

There tend to be "silos" of information. I felt I might have performed even better with opportunities to understand better the work of other departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the lines of communication about the long-range prospects for each facility in the corporate vision.

I worked at Novartis Pharmaceuticals full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I consider Novartis to be one of the best companies to work for in terms of salary, work life balance, diversity and inclusion, benefits and continuous learning. In terms of people, I would say that it depends on who you are matched with (department, peers, superiors, Subordinates, etc). I had an excellent experience during my eight year tenure because I was paired with a great group of peers, superiors, subordinates, contractors, and vendors.

    Cons

As in most companies, your career path may not progress as fast as you would like it to. As a result, you may have to make the difficult decision to leave. Also, do to the nature of the business, "layoff", similar to rain, is a natural occurrence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to Management is to keep making the company profitable for shareholders because there is absolutely nothing you can do to satisfy every employees' needs encompassing personal growth, office culture and training. As with most companies, personal growth is up to the discretion of the respective employees. Novartis spends millions per year trying to maintain an office culture that is inclusive and accepting. Albeit, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the countless hours you spend on internal trainings (compliance, job specific, diversity & inclusion, etc).
