    Pros

The people are friendly. The benefits are amazing. The pay is competitive. I felt I learned a lot from my position.

    Cons

The management is very old fashioned and is not open to a ton of change. Also there is not a lot of room for personal growth.

    Advice to Management

More personal growth opportunities. Open to change.

    Pros

Great railroad culture, wonderful mix of old and new, safety focus, railroad retirement benefits.

    Cons

Pay slightly lower than other companies. Lots of older systems , some silos.

    Advice to Management

Keep bringing in new talent to work with the experienced "old hands".

    Pros

Long established business. Very strong in the area it operates. Very good benefits - although that seems to keep salaries lower than the market. Great people in my peer group. Career opportunities to get into middle management seem to be fewer and fewer as a result of 'trimming' the number of higher positions.

    Cons

Long established business. People stay with the company for 30+ years. Slow to adapt to changes in technology.

  6. The pay is good, but the work environment is terrible.

    Pros

Decent pay for the area I live in. Good retirement. Health and life insurance.

    Cons

Hard to advance. In order to ease into management at the clerical level you need to be a female. Company sees record profits but raises our out of pocket health insurance every year. Hours are terrible. They treat all employees like they are instantly replaceable and are lucky to even be there. Job morale is extremely low, very few people enjoy their work.

    Advice to Management

Stop preaching the ADI and start enforcing it. Supervisors treat employees like we are expendable and they will hire two more to take our places. When every year our insurance goes up and the upper level management are getting multi-million dollar bonuses there is a problem within the company.

    Pros

NS is a growing company and has great opportunities for growth inside and outside your group. Also technical and non technical growth is encouraged.
    People are very helpful.

    Cons

Pay is definitely on the lower side.
Transparency is lacking across departments especially when it comes to sharing data and insights.

    Advice to Management

Need better integration and synergy across groups.

    Pros

Very Stable Company. Definitely room for growth. The salary is a little low compared to other companies, but has a great benefits package. This is a great company for a young entry level employee that will stay with one company.

    Cons

Not a good company for older employees, because you need to put in 30 years to get a good retirement package.

    Advice to Management

Need to institute proper documentation, requirements gathering.

    Pros

Descent benefits until healthcare started going south. Decent pay until taxes went thru the roof.

    Cons

Deductibles on any hospital visits are way high. Of course someone has to pay for everyone thats getting free healthcare now. Norfolk Southern loves there contractors and would love to get rid of all there employees and just contract all the work out so as a worker you never really know how long your going to have a job. Morale is usually very low among employees because of the constant worries of contractors coming in also.

    Advice to Management

Quit trying to contract everyones jobs out and take care of the employees you have already. Workers that have been out there for 15 -40 years working injury free and helping you be the safest railroad in the country and then you just want to stick it to them and bring in a contractor to do there job.
