Great place to work, but huge lack of communication

Management Trainee (Current Employee)
East Saint Louis, IL (US)

I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time for less than a year

ProsNS has a lot to offer: great pay, stability, unparalleled benefits and a PENSION. They haven't laid off a manager in ages and there are plenty of options within the company in terms of career choice.

ConsZero communication on the operations department. And be prepared to deal with tyrannical bosses, constant relocation, having no social life, and in some regions, a powerful, unyielding union.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou MUST communicate more.

Money and Benefits are good, Hours are awful

Train Dispatcher (Current Employee)
Greenville, SC (US)

I have been working at Norfolk Southern full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat pay and benefits, once you are finished training
Lots of opportunities to advance due to retirements

Cons-Management is inconsistent in their expectations
-You will never EVER hear you have done a good job, but you will catch hell any time you make a mistake
-Punishments for mistakes are inconsistent, what gets one person fired, will get another a slap on the wrist
- Training pay is only $120/day, barely enough to live on
- EVERYTHING is based on seniority, regardless of ability to perform your job
- it is a 24/7 operation, you will work holidays/weekends/nights
- There is a very old school mentality, there is very little to no respect for younger employees

Advice to Senior ManagementUnderstand that the younger employees are the future of your company, and if you don't hold on to them, and respect their opinions, you will lose them.

- Job stability
- Management will work with you

- Shift work with odd rest days

Satisfactory experience with Norfolk Southern.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Norfolk Southern

ProsThe salary is competitive and great benefits. Retiring with Norfolk Southern is a breeze. Your spouse will receive retirement benefits up to 50% of what you receive as a retired employee.

ConsThe company is powerful and knows it. The entire recruitment process takes a long time (3-4 months) so it is tough to tell if you are still on their radar.

Ridiculously Abusive Culture

Trainmaster/Chief Dispatcher (Former Employee)
McDonough, GA (US)

I worked at Norfolk Southern full-time for more than 5 years

ProsPay is relatively well.
Mobility due to large number of employees retiring.
Unlimited potential if you're willing to set aside your private life and dignity.

ConsYou will work 24hrs/day with no sick, personal, or other time off.
Vacation policy is terrible, considering you work 24/7. Operations employees get the same amount of off time as staff employees who work 40hr work weeks.
Management has old school mentality that doesn't value employees.
Education is worthless. NS relies on a large number of uneducated people who "can't" readily find comparable salaries.
Relocations to unfavorable locations.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of Division Superintendents that are stifling innovation and running away educated supervisors who are not willing to put up with the abusive culture.
Culture change is nice, but you will never get buy in from rank and file until the bad actors are gone. People will not suddenly start trusting officers with a history of unsavory conduct.

I loved interning at NS. The people were great and the work was challenging. I learned a lot.

Tax Intern (Former Employee)
Roanoke, VA (US)

I worked at Norfolk Southern as an intern for less than a year

ProsThe people are amazing. They are nice and helpful. It felt like a family.
They allow you to work on a lot of different things so you can learn as much as possible in your time there.
Always willing to help and answer questions.

ConsThey don't have an intern "program" so sometimes it takes a while to find a project for you to work on.

Norfolk Southern Co-op opportunities is a good place to start

Inter-modal Systems Coop (Former Employee)
Norfolk, VA (US)

I worked at Norfolk Southern full-time for less than a year

ProsThe pay is really good, people are friendly. There is a lot of growth opportunities and many of the employees there will be retiring in mass amounts within the next five years.

ConsSometimes, depending on how busy your supervisor is, there is downtime where you have nothing to do. Norfolk Southern is also old fashioned,
