Disappointing career at NetApp - thought it was going to be a long term place of growth

Senior Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than a year

ProsGood salaries and comp plans; great facilities at HQ in Sunnyvale; some of the leadership team was very inspiring; good community give back program

ConsToo big to get things done quickly enough; no direction from leadership; no leadership growth opportunities unless at HQ; company does not treat people fairly; lots of people ready to throw you under the bus at any opportunity; it was all about status reports and updating the latest version for your boss' boss; compensation adjustments were vastly different by VP

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than a year

ProsEmployee perks, time-off policies and values of the company are well known to all - always in top 10 of Best companies to work for list. Really good work-life balance. Work from home facility can be used reasonably

ConsSlow paced environment plus middle management is not motivated enough to drive the actual working employees

Developer (Current Employee)
Sunnyvale, CA (US)

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat company values
Very innovative technology
Great OS that is very dependable - you can believe in the company product
the people working for NetApp are great.

ConsFew perks beyond the expected - no big parties, individual contributors always fly economy even for long haul trips, the company is always trying to save money even when they do well, no recognition for long term employees such as reaching 5 years or 10 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't lose track of the company values. Also, don't lose track of the goals.

Not the same company it was a few years ago

Account Manager (Current Employee)
Vienna (Austria)

I have been working at NetApp full-time for more than 10 years

ProsNetApp overall is a great company with many skilled an talented people. I have never before worked for a company, where the employees are more committed to their work.

ConsNetApp is not any more the technology company it once was. The whole company is build around one storage product and has not managed over the last years to broaden the product portfolio. Acquisitions where not successful executed. A lot of mid management people, who joint the company during high growth period do not know how do deal with a low growth business model. Top management seems to be disconnected from the field.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen more to the field.

High Performers

Engagement Manager (Former Employee)
Melbourne (Australia)

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 3 years

ProsPeople are very focused on success, success is very well congratulated.
No deal is off the table if you can sell the idea of it, you are left to drive your own business.

ConsA little ambiguous in the way you need to run your own show. Management are very focused on forward looking and ensuring that numbers are met which is fair enough.

Advice to Senior ManagementA little more matrix management to ensure that communication flows are a little more pronounced so as to remove ambiguity.
