    Pros

One of the best places I've ever worked in terms of Work Environment & People
    > Managers tend to have an open door policy
    > Work utilizes true engineering knowledge: calculations, CAD, etc.
    > Combination of hands on and design experience
    > Opportunity to work in different business segments all over the world
    > Flexibility

    Cons

    > A fair amount below the APEGA average manufacturing engineering salary
    > Work can sometimes seem repetitive, especially with some of the internal software
    > Lower than average vacation days/ no flex days
    > Have to be in the right group in order to advance well

    Advice to Management

    > Encourage more employee development in terms of taking classes, going to seminars, doing lunch & learns etc.
    > Reduce time spent on having to deal with long internal processes with software for Engineering
    > Do not deny that a Salary at or above the APEGA starting average for manufacturing industry engineering is unjust, or unfair.

    Pros

Not a bad place to work if you're interested in the oil and gas industry. I worked there only a very short time as I didn't feel it was a good fit for me, but NOV as a company seemed fairly decent. Co-workers were friendly and helpful, although not much training was provided. It was really a learn-as-you-go kind of job. Pay was standard for the industry. Benefits provided after 3 months. Very big company with many different divisions, various room for advancement.

    Cons

Managers didn't seem to be around often, which could be good or bad depending on your viewpoint. You were required to work overtime and on-call on weekends. Long hours. No flexibility with hours or break times.

    Pros

Excellent people and environment, a variety of experience to learn from with a wide range of possibilities from all levels and aspects of engineering design, manufacturing, etc. to administrative activities that span all areas of management. This also includes office/field work balance, local/international work and travel.

    Cons

Low salaries, at times can be boring, some annoying employees here and there every now and then, low opportunities of growth and progress and with no clearly defined career path.

    Advice to Management

Make a better effort to orient your employees, give them a better introduction into your culture and company, have a clear path for every individual that joins.

    Pros

Since each division of NOV operates independently there are going to be a wide variety of everyone's experiences. Some divisions are quite well run.

    Cons

In the Hydrarig/Enerflow division (Calgary, AB):
-Communication down from management and between departments is lacking
    -Lack of training
-No performance evaluations or wage review processes
    -IT is understaffed
-Hiring office staff for hourly jobs at low wages and expecting people to make up the difference in overtime.
-managers (claim to) lack the authority to adjust wages in their own division, requiring authorization from Houston

    Advice to Management

Clean house in management and bring in a management team that can build a successful culture.

    Pros

There are many opportunities for employees to advance within this large orginization. There are numerous training modules such as inhouse training, online training and outsides sources. The benefit package is great for a family or single person. There is a company matching RRSP program ( company match increase with years of service ). The company encourges employees to use there vacation time

    Cons

A huge issue is hiring entry level employees in my area due to very low unemployment levels and a below industry starting wage. Activity in my area is like a bees hive, never stops. This situation is a hardship on all current employees.

    Advice to Management

Consideration of a higher wage for entry level employees. I order to make that work, lower level current employees would have to be compesated also. The ripple effect of this would be drawing on a larger workforce.

    Pros

Management extremely flexible and willing to let employees try new things
Provide freedom to let employees perform self start-up project or initiative
Unlimited career opportunities and roles to undertake

    Cons

Compensation package is lacking compared to industry standard
It takes great deal of time to implement change

    Advice to Management

The company environment and harmony makes NOV a great place to work for, but the compensation package is definitely lacking. A more comprehensive offering would definitely help employees stay
