I have been working at National Oilwell Varco as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Opportunities are available if you seek for them. Ask around to get trained in other positions. Learn whatever you can and you'll move up.

    Cons

Hours are sometimes long but the industry is mostly like this so there aren't that many choices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication!! Departments don't talk to each other about what's going on. Upper management never lets employees know what's going on with the company. It doesn't feel like a community.

Because it's so large, visibility is a challenge. Challenging status quo is not a good thing here.

I worked at National Oilwell Varco full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Everything seemed okay at first with good benefits, retirement and the like. The management was strong with great projections for the future.

    Cons

Our company was bought then promptly sold off in a matter of a year after much assurance that NOV would never do such a thing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a little more forthcoming with your new acquisitions and they may trust you a little more.

I have been working at National Oilwell Varco full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Interesting place to work, challenging assignments. Good vacation policy great benefits package. Generally a positive work environment.

    Cons

Complete change in corporate culture post Varco merger. Very risk averse, unwilling to take on disruptive technology, promotion based on causing least pain rather than creating most opportunity. They do not value employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a chance. Develop a small company mentality--experiment with small start ups within NOV and treat them like Venture Capitalists do--some will pay off big time, most won't but the experience will be tremendously valuable in any case.
