    Cons

Salary is a little less than what I was hoping for.

    Pros

Good company overall to work for in Houston that gives one opportunities to learn different business sides and how it works in the oil and gas industry.

    Cons

Like in all companies it’s who you know that moves you up the ladder of success and not what you know or done for a better bottom line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don’t close the door on others not in your circle of acquaintances

    Pros

I enjoy the type of work and guys I work with. Great line leads.

    Cons

I am a machine operator. NOV bought our our previous company R&M. Since they bought our company 3 years ago, they have not given any raises. We use to volunteer for the weekend s and always had plenty for the shift, It is now mandatory to come in every weekend. We have 1-2days off each month. The last several weekends they didn't have any work for us so we swept the floor Saturday and Sunday for our entire shift. So they have us come in even when they don't have work for us to do.

Managers and office personnel receive their weekends and holidays off. Personnel that work in the shop work all holidays. This is not a place to work if you enjoy spending time with your family. No pay increases, and only 1 - 2 day off work each month even when they don't have any work. When they give us a day off like Thanksgiving, they wait until the end of your shift the night before the holiday. So you can't ever make plans. This year I sent my wife to have Thanksgiving with our family since I though I had to work. I would have enjoyed being with my family had I known I had that day off.

New hires now come from a temp agency and make more than veteran employee's that have been there for more than 5 yrs. It does not pay to have loyalty to this company. I enjoy the job and the type of work. This job is better suited to a single person that does not have a family or someone who doesn't want to do anything other than work. They also.

As employee's move up to other positions they are not given raises, just more responsibilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When there isn't any work, let the guys have the weekend off. And let them know before they come in.

I worked at National Oilwell Varco

    Pros

Company Values are excellent, the benefits are great. The executive management are very in touch with middle management.

    Cons

The company is so large that you really don't know what other facilities do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Network between divisions so the middle management can meet other managers running the same department as them in order to increase best practices in all divisions.

I have been working at National Oilwell Varco full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Work life balance is decent, but during crunch times you can put in many hours(i find this typical of any organization, though). Pay is low for the industry, but the job security is high. While our competitors are currently laying off thousands, NOV has done well to keep everyone on staff in Houston.

    Cons

Systems are old and antiquated, running simple reports are difficult and require much time.

Middle managers are often wrong, or unhappy, which creates some tension around the office, perhaps that is only at the location I work at though.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Office Culture pretty much doesnt exist outside of the corporate office, make efforts to change that.

    Pros

in general I feel good working for NOV, the people and the amount of work fit my expectations, I want to be involved in more projects and be in contact with new knowledge

    Cons

the training programs are really poor, and I think make the good talents look for other opportunities, also I think the salary range is below the media.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

more motivation to the employees make them happy and with more commitment.
