Google's red-headed stepchild

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Motorola Mobility full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe salaries were OK to decent, there were good benefits (albeit ones that got weaker year by year) and the work when you got to actually get on and do it, was fun.

ConsMotorola Mobility was always Google's red-headed stepchild. They always kept it at arms' length and treated the company and its employees as something they were embarrassed by, even as they disremembered it, laying off large chunks, selling off other chunks, and finally dumping the rest. Needless to say morale was not very good - how could it be when your corporate owners didn't like to think you existed.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave a strategy and be proud of what your people create - don't let a once proud name completely disappear under the new ownership.

Great learning experience but too many management changes

Director, Strategic Sourcing (Former Employee)
Libertyville, IL (US)

I worked at Motorola Mobility full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat team, smart and motivated people. Exciting industry - high technology that is fast paced and innovative.

ConsToo many changes in management too soon, severe competition reduces profitability, many copycat products coming from overseas like Taiwan and China.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep stability in leadership, build a more cohesive team based environment

Large company where you are just a number

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Motorola Mobility full-time for more than 3 years

ProsPlenty of work/lab space
Ability to control entire test environment
Access to good coffee

ConsCompany went years without providing raises although they had the money to pay the CEO around 30 million to attract him to work there.

Advice to Senior ManagementYour on-the-ground developers and testers know what they are doing! They have more technical knowledge compared to their executive managers (director and above). Let them do their work and stop micro managing!

disorganized

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Motorola Mobility

ProsI think there are a number of innovative thinkers and people who will push to do better.

ConsManagement of projects are rather disorganized and it just seems there are far too many products for the marketplace. I wish the understanding of "keep it simple" was understood. I also feel that they can stand to understand what innovation can be, it isn't all about engineering, and Motorola needs to be more than engineering, otherwise they just won't be able to compete.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep things simple, don't try to over-message, and make sure there is a great marketable reason for creating products. Additionally, make sure before you start the marketing process, you actually are keenly aware of why and for whom you are creating this product, and especially its relevancy in the marketplace.

Nice team with an uncertain future

Project Manager (Current Employee)
Sunnyvale, CA (US)

I have been working at Motorola Mobility full-time for less than a year

ProsSome people are friendly, free snacks and drinks, nice decor, massage chairs near breakrooms.

ConsLots of email, everyone gets copied in emails, political, backstabbing practices, soon to be acquired by Lenovo

Advice to Senior ManagementVery sad to see that you are selling Motorola to Lenovo. The new phones Moto X and Moto G could have been the beginning of a new renaissance at Motorola. Now, Motorola will just become another maker of cheap Chinese phones.

Never a dull moment

Senior Program Manager (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL (US)

I have been working at Motorola Mobility full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat people who are very strong technically. Great products. Good benefits (medical, vacation, etc). Flexible working conditions (work from home, flexible hours).

ConsDespite significant downsizing, organization remains siloed. Senior management retains high degree of control on most decisions. Too many of the mid and high level managers lack interest in resource management, making career development truly the employee's responsibility

Advice to Senior ManagementTake more big risks.
