    Good benefits; product applications were interesting

    Resistance to change; production manager was complacent and lacked leadership.

    I worked at Moog Animatics full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Cool product! Fun technology with a wide scope of applications. Perhaps the best product on the market for fast product development & fast prototyping. Good working hours & nice workplace.

    Cons

    Poor leadership & mismanagement from the top resulting in massive turnover! The harm to a company in turnover for a highly specialized technical product that takes years to master its critical technology is hard to quantify by loss of market share & sales. The new president replacing Bigler simply does not have enough of a technical background to do the job, actually a freakin English major! So he's in way over his head in the technology and temperament, even in marketing he's just clueless. Comes off as a super nice guy when you meet him, never a direct answer, just chuckles and sighs a lot... but after the veneer comes off you get to see a vicious & vindictive corporate POS. Hence builds a toxic culture. Products are so capable, yet for the high turnover in manufacturing and sales SmartMotors have high failure rate too. So even after the acquisition by a great company the SmartMotors have still not been made reliable. When products fail, they are not warranted in good faith unless a giant future sales potential exist. They charge the customer just to evaluate why the controllers for the motors fail which even when not misapplied, as they are filled with Chinese components! They have burned so many of their industrial customers & distributors by not standing behind their product or even with emergency stock for their customers, that their brand is badly damaged and will have a challenge to ever recover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Shame on Moog for not doing their due diligence in this purchase. They paid over 5 times too much & got sold a bill of goods. There were duped bad, no other suitors were even looking to buy the company for its anemic profit & expiring patents. They kept it all such a good secret of the acquisition they didn't avail themselves of the employee's or ex-employees insights about the companies precarious outlook & structural problems. Moog needs to change management at this subsidiary or just cut their losses.

    I have been working at Moog Animatics

    Pros

    I enjoy working at Animatics for the most part. Most of the people are friendly (though most aren't the go out after work together friendly). Since they've been acquired by Moog, positive changes have been taking place such as yearly reviews (which they didn't have before), an actual HR person, some processes and better monitoring of benefits. Depending on the manager, some are more flexible with time than others, though everyone generally sticks to the 8-hour rule. Some social things have been implemented such as holiday parties and chili cook-offs, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays 2 people lead lunch time yoga/pilates in one of the open areas. In comparison to the previous review, there are no longer the top people who call it "family" and bring in their kids (even though they didn't allow others to) so in that way it's gotten a little more fair.

    Cons

    Transitions are not easy. Though no one got laid off during the acquisition, there have been lots of new systems going into place and politics in the office definitely exist. Generally the pattern seems to be getting younger sales engineers in who do a good job for a year or two, and then losing them to a competitor (who pays commission) once they get good enough to make a difference. The people who are happiest here are those that are content doing their job and getting their paycheck, unfortunately there's not much focus on improvement or career trajectories of the individual unless you really push hard, and even then it's not a priority. There's still some "bad blood" from certain management that didn't exactly treat their employees fairly (lowering salary during the recession and never bringing it back up), but for people hired after the acquisition it seems to be just fine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus on developing your people more, as they're the most important asset you have as a company. Also a little moral boosting every once in a while would help. There are a few people in the company working really hard and pouring their heart into their work but without the proper recognition, you'll probably lose them sooner rather than later.

    Opportunities to learn a lot. A very unique and intersting product.

    Cons

    Duties and responsibilities are ambiguous or undefined. Management and organization is lacking. Strange culture about time off and attendance.

    Structure incentive programs for employees. Be more flexible with time off. Define career paths within organization

    I worked at Moog Animatics

    Pros

    Animatics has excellent caring employees on the manufacturing floor, in the machine shop and at the lower levels of the company. These Animatics employees are striving to do a great job. The people in the back would be the biggest pro here. The Animatics SmartMotor is brilliant, and developed by a brilliant, creative mind. There is a huge demand for it, and now that they have been bought out by Moog, perhaps even opportunities for advancement within the larger new parent company. Remains to be seen.

    Cons

    Zero written expectations for the position; no actual human resource guidelines for employee expectations/standards/laws; company unofficial policy of never praising for a job well done (one must wait until the yearly review); strange obsession with the idea that more hours on the job equals a job well done, rather than actually looking to see whether a job is well done or not; salaried employees typically berated for arriving after 8:00am (regardless of how many hours said employee had worked that month/week); certain levels of employees allowed to bring younger children to work and let them run amuck, but not allowing other employees to even bring their children in if they don't have daycare for a day; general lack of trust towards all employees lower than upper level management...

    Working here is like being on a totally different planet. There are no actual written policies, no procedures manuals, no HR manuals, yet there are all of these unspoken expectations. People get in trouble when they don't meet expectations that were never expressed. It's like being in an abusive relationship, you never know what you are going to do that is going to get you in trouble, and they are likely to not tell you until you've been doing said infraction for some time. And then wham! they act like you never did anything good and you're a terrible person. Strange strategy, especially for a company whose upper level management believes that everyone is part of the happy little Animatics family.

    If you are new to the valley, young, and need some experience, this is a great place to learn how to work really hard, for long hours, with a really truly great product. It will also send you on your way to really really appreciate your next job, at a different company that engenders trust, cooperation, acknowledgement of tasks completed well, and generally accepted management styles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Read about creating a trusting environment, take a class, do something! Everything that the management is doing seems to go against the grain of all of the management books I have read over the past 20 years. A thorough assessment from an independent third party on the true thoughts and needs of your employees would not only be an eye opener, it would also start you on the way to being able to get more effective, clean and hard work out of your employees. People are scared of losing their jobs at this company, and it is the only reason many of them are staying. Many of them are not working as hard, efficiently and happily as they easily could be.
