ProsFrom an IT perspective you get exposure and experience to the latest Technology.
The people you work with are the best asset and make the job worthwhile.
They pay well, although it could be better since the money they offer is not enough to stave off any competition.
flexible hours -- although this depends on your manager, which could change at a moments notice.
work from home options -- although again, this depends on your manager and some feel the need to micro manage more than others.

ConsNo consensus of direction from Executive leadership. Talk to several difference Executive leaders and you'll all different visions from all of them.

SDLC is not structured for IT infrastructure --- huge amount of stress. This is not due to the SDLC process itself, but the lack of any real effort to make it work for IT.

Overall SDLC process is a nightmare.

For IT, you are the Subject Matter Expert if something is broken. If it's a Design or Architecture question then the experience and perception is your Expertise is null and void.

Summary for IT staff -- If you like working in the movie Office Space and having your Expertise ignored -- come here!

Advice to Senior ManagementStart asking your Subject Matter Experts to design and develop options for you instead of trying doing it yourselves -- you wouldn't ask your Carpenter to perform Heart Surgery ...

No one is going to provide any honest feedback for fear of reprisal. If you want honest feedback -- allow for Anonymous feedback.

You are a big reason SDLC is not working -- because there's an unwritten exception process for executive leadership team and you are burning out your IT staff.

Cons100% commission structure is tough. Make sure you screen potential manager carefully if new to business.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove ease of using MMLISI platform.

Former Employee – worked at MassMutual full-time for more than a year

ProsWilling to pay competitive salaries to the right employees.
Most Management is very supportive and willing to mentor employees.

ConsUnprofessional office staff
Owner is micromanager and play employees against each other
Environment of favortism is evident
Required to work far more hours than compensation justifies

Advice to Senior ManagementTrust employees to do their work correctly, in a timely manner and efficiently. Wait until employees do something wrong before reprimanding and use the mistake as a training opportunity rather than an excuse to barade someone.

ProsHR identifies future talent and works to develop them

ConsGenerally a slow-moving company with a relatively conservative culture for the area

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior level management is extremely talented but does not work well together and either lacks or fails to communicate a meaningful long-term version for the enterprise.

San Jose, CA (US)

Former Employee – worked at MassMutual full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat compensation, benefits and retirement opportunities to agents who are serious about succeeding. Superior permanent Life products that are tops in industry. Well known brand that is conservative in a time when conservative means much to consumers. This company is there to support you if you understand the idea of "What you put in is what you get out".

ConsProducts outside permanent life products such as annuities need revamping to get more competitive with industry. The broker dealer needs to get in line with it's view on production as other top B.D's, not limiting Advisers in areas that other top B.D's approve of.

Management is only as good as the General Agent at the helm of the agency. A compensation structure based solely on commission does not address separate motivational factors and therefore, commission alone will not adequately motivate nor retain a sales force. When there is obvious examples of sarcasm, lack of a serious attitude, as well as a rather negative environment, this can be quite difficult in a career position as a sales professional that is already extremely difficult. This only creates a real and perceived distance between yourself and most team members, as witnessed by a needlessly excessive personnel turnover of higher producing agents, especially when it’s done on the heels of a preference for weak candidates. “Salespeople Don't Quit Companies, They Leave Managers.”

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to your agents in a way that you (or best practices) expect these agents to pay attention to their top clients(remember the ones who are responsible for our employment through their premiums)

Chesterfield, MO (US)

Current Employee – been working at MassMutual full-time for more than a year

ProsUnlimited potential, you can take days off without needing any approval

ConsIt is set up like a pyramid scheme. You have to pay to work here, anywhere from $300-500 a month. The worst part is everyone gets paid before you. I know one rep that was there made about $3000 the ENTIRE year and only saw $50 of it because the company had their hands in it before they even paid her.

You pay for EVERYTHING, the "salary plus bonus" is a joke and not guaranteed

Extremely high turnover rate

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't set new people up to fail and stop hiring new people just to steal their warm market

Former Employee – worked at MassMutual full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood benefits
Flex time
Great bunch of co-works

ConsNo respect for their employees

Advice to Senior ManagementWhat MotherMutual has done is brought in a bunch of consultants from McKinsey to restructure their internal employees. Making them do ridiculous things and firing those that don't "play by the rules." MM used to be a great company to work for and now it's like working for the Gesstapo. Find me a happy employee...you can't. Awful company. Go look for employment elsewhere. You're better off.

Current Employee – been working at MassMutual

ProsGreat life insurance products and a growing line up of other forms of contractual wealth.

ConsNo base salary and only sales commissions...which can be difficult in this market. They also emphasize life insurance and not investments (of course, it's a life insurance company). Your GA can choke you to death on the mini fee's they charge too.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is a high fail rate among 1-4 year advisors because training lacks a bit. Need more wholesaler events, etc to get familiar with the products.
