Atlanta, GA (US)

Current Employee – been working at Marriott full-time for more than 10 years

ProsExcellent Training, Great potential for career growth, and International Company.

ConsExtremely political!!! Salary compensation is certainly below other hotel companies!!!

Advice to Senior ManagementI really would like to see more career advancement of my peers based on work performance and not based on if one is liked on a personal level.

I really would like to see the company truly take a look at compensation particularly with managers. I applied for a for a promotion position and was offered the position. However, I struggled to decide if I wanted the position due to the low pay increase offered. It's extremely difficult when you are looking to advance and the advance requires relocation to an area where housing cost is 150-200% more then where you are currently located and the compensation increase less than is 11%.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend

Norfolk, VA (US)

Former Employee – worked at Marriott part-time for more than a year

Pros-Great Hotel discounts
-Good tips
-Easy Job
-Driving nice cars

This is a great job to have in college but is in no way a good career.

Cons-Long Weekend Hours
-Poor management
-Bottom of the totem pole at the hotel
-Corporate politics

The management has no idea how to treat people, and most of them are on a power trip.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not talk down to people.

Frederick, MD (US)

Current Employee – been working at Marriott full-time for more than 10 years

ProsCheap hotel deals, when available, are a great benefit (only for permanent employees). Comfortable office building. Tries to be green, if you like that kind of stuff. Traces of corporate loyalty remain, but that's changing fast, so hurry up to enjoy it. They have money to burn on nice HQ facilities, which is nice for us who are there. Company makes good profits, so great bennies and pay for upper management if that's where you're looking to work.

ConsIT outsourcing is well underway. Beware if you are IT contracting; they might tell you it's "just a re-org", but IT employees are being rebadged with outsourcers later this year, or (mostly) just sacked, with only a handful left to oversee the outsourced services, and IT contractors have no idea what's coming. Outside of IT, seems OK, so long as you watch for the next benefit cut; they do this to some random thing every year or so. Other IT shops in DC Metro often pay much better. Absolutely, totally would never recommend this place right now to an IT friend unless s/he is desperate and willing to work a rapacious contract but with an unknown future.

Advice to Senior ManagementToo late for advice other than how to pick up the wreckage. You sure picked the wrong guys to run this. Get some good lawyers to deal with your outsourcers later. Get a good PR firm to deal with the fallout from random IT failures that are coming.

Warsaw (Poland)

Current Employee – been working at Marriott full-time for more than 3 years

ProsJob safety, good relations with co-employees, well designed working tools. Well known brand name and multilingual environment.

ConsPoor salary, no promotion possibility. Top management detached from real life of a hourly working staff which returns very poor salary, absolutely no bonus (year or occasional). No possibilities to improve skills needed to be a better employee.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter salary, so people can afford to live a decent life.

Chicago, IL (US)

Former Employee – worked at Marriott full-time

ProsGreat place for advancement. Very equal opportunity employer. Lots of wonderful, really nice employees.

ConsI use to be very proud to say I work for this hotel. In the last 5 years the quality of upper management has gone so far down hill that I'm surprised that they still are in business. If it wasn't for the hourly employees, I'm not sure this place would still be in business.

Advice to Senior ManagementGrow up and get more involved in the job you are there to do..
