Current Employee – been working at Marriott full-time
Pros – - It's great working for a big, structured company like Marriott. There is always someone to talk to about an issue you are having, and someone higher up if needed.
- Disciplinary actions are well structured and reasonable.
- Most properties and management are open to, encouraging, and helpful when it comes to cross training and career advancement.
- People you work with will generally have a similar personality and will become your friends.
- Overtime is usually available, very helpful when you need the extra $
- Hiring decisions are usually well thought-out, so it is rare to work with people who are too inexperienced for their position.
- Managers are incredibly understanding and flexible with associate schedules (students, associates with children, requests for time off)
- Yearly Associate Opinion Surveys ensure opinions are heard and people are communicating with each other on various things (even if it takes some time.. your voice WILL be heard)
- Associate / Friends / Family discount on hotel rooms is phenomenal, though there are restrictions (sometimes can be difficult to find holidays, busy weekends, etc).
Cons – - The work week is Saturday through Friday, and for hourly associates the schedule is not released until the Thursday prior, making it difficult to plan out your week.
- Depending on what department you work in, you may have to pick/prioritize your holidays off. For
example you may not get Christmas Day off if you got Thanksgiving Day off
- Pay range can be lower than what you may find at other companies for comparable jobs
- Mandatory overtime for management/salaried staff
- Software used is very outdated (some still being used are DOS based)
- Depends on which property, but often budgeting is an issue for certain things that should be important (ie. uniforms, filling short staffed departments)
- Takes a long time to replace an associate (on several occasions it has taken over 2 months to hire a replacement in various jobs I've been in, this results in stress and overworking of existing staff)
Advice to Senior Management – - It is not an unreasonable request the schedule be available prior to Thursday afternoon.
- Always remember Mr. Marriott's famous words: "If you take care of your people, your people will take care of your customers, and your business will take care of itself."

Current Employee – been working at Marriott full-time for less than a year
Pros – Great opportunity for advancement and good programs are in place, especially for hotel and restaurant management majors. Management seems to really care about their employees goals.
Cons – At my particular property, the management can be too easy going on poor preforming employees.

Former Employee – worked at Marriott full-time for more than a year
Pros – * It's a big company - you get to know how major corporations operate and what to expect from a corporate environment
* People are friendly and willing to help you and answer your questions
Cons – * This is specific to my role: the work got a little repetitive - seeing the same or very similar problems/issues that I needed to resolve

Current Employee – been working at Marriott full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – opportunities to grow within or be transferred is relatively high as new properties are mushrooming every other month
Cons – you get a young management above you with middle-light-weight experience who don't have the expertise to develop others
Advice to Senior Management – retain or hire top quality people instead of promoting juniors so quickly just to meet localisation goals. you'll lose good people who are currently working with you

Current Employee – been working at Marriott full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Job safety, good relations with co-employees, well designed working tools. Well known brand name and multilingual environment.
Cons – Poor salary, no promotion possibility. Top management detached from real life of a hourly working staff which returns very poor salary, absolutely no bonus (year or occasional). No possibilities to improve skills needed to be a better employee.
Advice to Senior Management – Better salary, so people can afford to live a decent life.

Current Employee – been working at Marriott full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – There can be opportunities to advance and switch to different departments; good company culture.
Cons – Too many layers at corporate level. The efficiency wheel turns slowly. Low turnover, probably too low as people can get complacent & not open to new ideas. Traditional environment, not very open to alternative work arrangements such as telecommuting, etc.
Advice to Senior Management – Continue to streamline corporate office. Change is good!

Former Employee – worked at Marriott full-time for less than a year
Pros – You can take a lot of breaks as a housekeeper, and are pretty much left to your own devices
Cons – Always start at 9am, work until all rooms on your board are clean (12 or so) half hour maximum per room. Rooms are filthy and you clean a lot of nasty stuff. Tips a sparse, and at the place I worked, there was an absurd amount of drama. If you are sick you must call 4 hours before your scheduled shift and find your own replacement. (no one wakes up at 5am to see if they are sick! and no one will come in for housekeeping on their day off)
Advice to Senior Management – hire more housekeepers so that the amount of rooms cleaned per day is manageable, and have a better system for calling in sick.

Former Employee – worked at Marriott full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – They look after you, and are very fair. I worked there, left and went back again. They're a true team orientated company who expect results.
Cons – You do need to play the "marriott corporate" game, and "fit in". If you don't, you won't last long. The culture is that of working together and making it happen which is good, so if you're not a team player, personable and make an effort, you won't survive.
Advice to Senior Management – Work the system.
Do the reports accordingly and on time and you'll do fine!

Former Employee – worked at Marriott full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – I Loved working for this company. I was sad to see my position eliminated due to corporate reorganization in June of 2011.
Cons – Corporate restructuring led me to lose my position after 15 years with the company. It was sad and unfortunate to have to start over elsewhere after 15 years.
