    I worked at Magellan Health

    Pros

Great benefits, including 401k contributions up to 6%. Employee assistance program is extremely useful and beneficial.

    Cons

Constantly changing goals and leadership made for a dog-eat-dog environment instead of one based on teamwork. Everyone worked from home at night, poor work/life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Many, many talented people throughout the company--take their advice, listen to their ideas instead of just hearing them.

    I worked at Magellan Health

    Pros

good salary for jobs in behavioral health or physical health

    Cons

Current staff say Magellan these days often feels like a rudderless ship without a leader.
As the switch to Magellan Complete Care started to come together over the summer, incoming leadership wanted the new team to oversee health plan's makeover instead of former staff. Current leadership in operations and leadership on the health services side engaged in a tug of war over the plan until it cost the company hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The in-house bickering meant that important decisions, became frantic, eleventh-hour decisions. The company's staff is still largely comprised of employees who resent the new hierarchical structure. Staff have expressed frustration that seemingly mundane decisions are filtered through an exec gantlet.
Costs to the company could have been managed if the reshuffling hadn’t produced such a chaotic work environment. But the new organizational structure put into effect has made morale at Magellan very low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

work with communicating with staff as well as learning staff actualy duties.

Current Employee - Senior Care Manager in Saint Louis, MO (US)

I have been working at Magellan Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Feel like I'm making a difference. Good pay for social services field. Good benefits. Great relationships are built. There is a good value system and the St. Louis office makes a point of giving back. Good succession planning program. Flexible regarding needing to take time off.

    Cons

No opportunity for growth unless you are part of the "in" crowd. Promotion is based more on personal preference rather than ability to lead. Thus, some of the middle management lacks good management skills and sometimes good work ethic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promotion should be more objective and less subjective. Based on ability to lead, quality of work and experience.

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook
    Approves of CEO
