I have been working at Johns Hopkins part-time for less than a year

ProsEveryone in the Office of Summer and Intersession programs is so warm and friendly. It's the best job I've had on campus. I enjoy going to work and feel like part of the team--it doesn't feel like work. My supervisor is really kind and really tries to give me tasks that will help develop the skills I need for my future career plans.

ConsI can't think of any cons.

Advice to Senior ManagementI can't think of any advice I would give.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend

The reputation of the institution is only the tip of the iceberg

Research Associate (Former Employee)

I worked at Johns Hopkins full-time for less than a year

ProsAs a simple summer intern, I learned more in two months than all the Lab classes I've taken to date. They treat you like a grad student. You can take this as a gift, run with it, and learn crazy amounts of extremely useful skills. Best lab experience of my life, I was assigned a mentor who gave me literature to read (took his time to find articles that would be useful) and made sure I understood why I was doing whatever it was that I was doing (western blot, qPCR, etc..) and how these assays functioned.

ConsYou will be working with some of the best and brightest, people at the top of their fields and brilliant graduate students. It's easy to become a bit intimidated. Also, housing wasn't paid for.

Advice to Senior ManagementWell, in terms of management, I'm not sure whether to direct this to the PI's or managers, or whomever. But keep doing what your doing.

A great place to gain top-notch experience.

Business Project Coordinator (Current Employee)
Baltimore, MD (US)

I have been working at Johns Hopkins full-time for more than 3 years

ProsOf course, reputation. Followed by the learning experience. It's a robust organization in a challenging, multifaceted industry. It's got decent benefits and great work-life balance.

ConsThe organization is so fragmented it damages leadership's potential. The pay is not competitive.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have too many hands to too many buckets. Resources are wasted on redundancies. Get organized. The company's desire to act like a democracy on every little issue is damaging.

I worked at Johns Hopkins part-time for more than a year

ProsI worked there as a graduate student, and had a fantastic experience in a variety of offices and new tutoring environments

Consas with all universities, certain aspects are hidebound and difficult to change. Progress is rewarding, though.

Advice to Senior Managementit would be better to have more flexible structures for a variety of functions, and give people a lot more latitude.

Research at the medical campus

Graduate Student Researcher (Current Employee)
Baltimore, MD (US)

I have been working at Johns Hopkins full-time for more than a year

ProsCulture pushes you to do more than you would expect coming in. Overall, is filled with great people who want to produce and discover as much as they can.

ConsThe culture that demand success and constant effort can seem overbearing at times. Medical campus can seem very impersonal. Parking is terrible and parking garages are not free for students during normal work hours. Many students opt for street parking but have been ticketed multiple times and/or towed at least once.
