I have been working at J. Crew part-time for more than a year

Pros-Cute clothes
-Friendly staff & management
-Pretty flexible with hours if you need to book time off
-Decent discount

Cons-When associates have full time availability may only get between 5-12 hours a week
-Low pay
-Not very much training, contributing to problems within the store
-Because lack of training, if you don't know who a very "well known" person working up in the corporate office is, you will get looked down upon
-They pressure you to look "J. Crew" and wear newer clothing, which can be hard if you're a student
-You don't get any free items or clothes to wear to work, and discounts often don't make the items that much more affordable
-Night shifts and on call shifts are the worst
-Schedule is made up only a week before, therefore you cannot plan your life in advance (which sucks)

Decent

Sales Support (Current Employee)
Toronto, ON

I have been working at J. Crew part-time for less than a year

ProsGreat discount, fun store environment, management is flexible with your availability if you are in school/other job, fun co-workers.

ConsManagement can be inconsistent with rules making things confusing, VERY little hours usually 4-12 hours if you are sales support/associate and have open availability. Depressing looking at all the nice stuff but being too poor to afford to from the little hours given, on call shifts.

Advice to Senior Managementhire less people to give more hours, be on the same page.

Overreaching goals and overly aggressive mgmt

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at J. Crew part-time

Pros-Good discount
-Good associates as coworkers
-Nice clothes

ConsManagement doesn't seem to staff the store properly and there are so little hours to be given and a large staff that needs hours. Mgmt also seems overly aggressive in trying to get their sales associates to make a high volume of sales (which if you don't make, your hours get slashed). The only people who get hours are management and stylists. Hours are far and few between despite having decent sales.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf there wasn't the added pressure of high sales goals in a low volume store, this would be an ideal workplace, however that isn't the case.

ProsGreat, upbeat environment with friendly coworkers and managerial staff. Starting salary reflects on your previous experience. Also, I am just a big fan of the clothes - you get a generous discount.

ConsAs I work in a fairly low volume store in a fairly quiet mall, I work about four measly hours a week. I would appreciate more, obviously.

Advice to Senior ManagementGimme more hours, guys.

Immature and misguided management

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at J. Crew

ProsThe best part of working here is the discount. Though you can't make enough money to use it often

ConsThe hours are completely ridiculous.
On-Call shifts are never used.
Management talk about associates on the sales floor.
Management treats associates with no respect.
The sales techniques used by management are too aggressive and often scare customers away.
The store is always a mess due to understaffing.
Management often disregard or talk badly about upper management. e.g. Merchandising manager talking badly about design concepts, telling associates how ugly some of the clothes are, trying to cut corners.

Advice to Senior ManagementI really don't know where you find your management but just because somebody has experience or training does not mean they are qualified to be a manager. Being able to communicate with employees in a respectable manner is more important. Also having more employees so you can give them small shifts that are spread apart may be a fiscal benefit but the atmosphere of the actual stores suffer, and who wants to shop in a store where everybody working there hates it?

I have been working at J. Crew

ProsGood hours. Awesome managers. Amazing discounts.

ConsWhat ever they give you as your job title is what you do. Not like Banana Republic where everyone contributes when new merchandise comes in. They hire you specifically for that job.

Amazing place to work !

Sales Support (Former Employee)

I worked at J. Crew part-time for more than a year

ProsThe leadership was awesome, they really want you to develop yourself and become the best employee that you can be. The culture is addicting, I love the company, they were always trying new things and trying to stay current. The company puts a big emphasis on quality of life and is made sure that you are taken care of. The employee discount is enough to work J.Crew alone.

ConsThe management didn't always feel like they wanted to be there, also the hours are long and inconsistent. Everyone loves their job, very difficult to move up.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe happy, it could be worse. All of the employees know when you don't like your job.
