Former Employee – worked at Interstate Hotels full-time for more than a year
Pros – -Many local properties have autonomy over their operations.
-Local management is empowered to make decisions on day-to-day operations.
-Mid-size operator has opportunities to move laterally or promotion.
-Variety of different levels of service in lodging (budget, mid-tier, and luxury)
Cons – -Only takes action to improve a property when it has reached a crisis.
-Senior management doesn't seem knowledgable of property-level issues.
-Technology for systems is outdated.
-No reaction to poor employee survey results.
-Benefit costs to employees slightly higher than comparable companies.
Advice to Senior Management – Take some serious action on property-level issues that come to your attention.
Establish values that are properly communicated and adhered to.
Only accept management contracts that are financially feasible--if an owner wants you to run a property with no expenses, no capital improvements, and yield a high profit--simply say 'no.'

Former Employee – worked at Interstate Hotels part-time for less than a year
Pros – I worked in a restaurant at one of the Interstate Hotels in Louisville, KY. I made decent money there and it was well run. For me, it was a short term job that got me through a stretch, but I know a lot of people had worked at that hotel for years and were really happy there.
Cons – Like a lot of hotel restaurants, business could be unstable so income wasn't reliable.
Advice to Senior Management – Coordinate marketing scheduling with area events better.

Current Employee – been working at Interstate Hotels full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Lots of hotels under management offering good flexibility for those willing to move.
Cons – Very difficult to be promoted or recognized unless you start with Interstate at entry level. Very strict attendance policy and very strict accountability for top level property employees but not for regionals (if you can get to that level).
Advice to Senior Management – Realize that valuable employees may exist outside the Interstate fold and treat them fairly when hired. Hold your Regionals to provide more support and less discipline. There is too much value placed on Interstate experience and not enough on the assets an "outsider" with the same amount, or more, experience might be able to bring.

Current Employee – been working at Interstate Hotels full-time for more than a year
Pros – This company cares for and looks out for their employees. They expect a lot out of their employees but also reward them as well.
Cons – The only problem I have is they they do not offer tuition reimbursement, It is almost like telling an employee that we like you where you are, you will not move up.

Current Employee – been working at Interstate Hotels full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Lots of hotels to choose from making advancement or relocation easier. Hotels are mostly deluxe and upscale properties and upper tier executives are great people, extremely nice and helpful. Some good benefits but not necessarily better than any other hotel.
Cons – Hotel level management holds all the accountability and is likely to have to work 60-70 hours a week due to excessive reporting and training required. Very hard to get promoted beyond that level unless you know how to play the game; if your regional folks are weak, it will reflect poorly on you as well and you will not get noticed. Regionals are highly compensated but apparently held responsible for almost nothing and don't necessarily reflect the values of the upper tier. Your personal experience will depend largely on them and your exposure to the great people at the top with be once a year at most.
Advice to Senior Management – Hold your regional managers more accountable for the way they treat people; it doesn't reflect your values. Get out and see your GMs.
