Former Employee - Sales Coordinator in Ypsilanti, MI (US)

I worked at Interstate Hotels full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Large Corporation. Many hotels. Ypsilanti Marriott is a large Full Service Hotel. Has F&B, Housekeeping, Sales, Catering, and the Front Desk.

    Cons

Hard to grow with the company. Did not move people up in the hotel, liked to bring in outside people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move up in the hotel from within.

Former Employee - Lead Line Cook in Miamisburg, OH (US)

I worked at Interstate Hotels part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Management let me run the kitchen as I wanted, listen to what I had to say, and as a prior Executive Chef, I was able to train my co- workers to do their jobs better. My manager would listen to any ideas I had, and gave me the opportunity to train her to do her job better. Management worked with my varying class schedule.

    Cons

I am a full time college student, and was unable to take advantage of transferring to another property for higher advancement. I had full control in the kitchen which was fun, it gave me freedom to try out new things but made for a busy time. I Loved it!

I have been working at Interstate Hotels full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Promote positive work environment, produce great sales-oriented tranings and conferences. Benefits are among the best in the industry.

    Cons

Hard for qualified employees who wish to move up and transfer to a different hotel within the same market. It appears that you have to move. Longtime employee was let go due to a no remote office location policy. This employee was not given a thank-you for your service or any farewell & best wishes from any of the management team.

I worked at Interstate Hotels part-time for more than a year

    Pros

The hotel discount perks are fantastic if you like to/are able to travel.

    Cons

Very corporate environment. There are always new hoops to jump through in an effort to put out fires, positive acknowledgement is rare.

I worked at Interstate Hotels full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

you'll learn good controls and management practices - and there are opportunities for growth

    Cons

where you work makes a difference

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Worked for a GM that ran the hotel like a personal fiefdom - not good for morale, more so that he was allowed to do this after repeated complaints to corporate.

I have been working at Interstate Hotels full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Flexibility in schedule, depending on your position
Very open forum for feedback from field staff to upper level executives
    Engaging leadership
    Training and growth opportunities

    Cons

    no tuition reimbursement
compensation is competitive but not considered leader in the industry

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to engage field associates in decision making. It is working. People feel valued when they are listened to and actions are taken. Consider Tuition reimbursement to encourage staff to continue education. Review benefits packages for field-level associates and consider the overall value.

I have been working at Interstate Hotels full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Extremely intelligent people always willing to assist you.
Industry leader providing you with excellent experience
    Rapid Growth

    Cons

You are just one of many
Will not listen to others ideas
The IT department is the absolute worst in the business
More of a CYA company than I'd prefer.
Bonuses are terrible. Change the criteria each year to fit the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your bonus structure sucks. You should really consider being more competitive.
Your IT department is the worst in the land. You should stop accepting excuses from the IT dept heads and over-haul it.

Former Employee - Guest Services Agent in Raleigh, NC (US)

I worked at Interstate Hotels full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I really enjoyed my co-workers. The managers empowered us to solve problems for guests on our own. The benefits were good, with inexpensive medical coverage. Pay was decent. Great recognition for a job well done, generally felt valued as an employee.

    Cons

Communication between departments, at least in the large hotel I worked at was lacking, so it made completing some tasks difficult. Assistant managers were supportive but were very overworked, usually working 60+ hours a week while higher level managers were going home earlier. I constantly felt bad for them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Assistant mangers were overworked, needed to have at least three assistant mangers at the front desk instead of just two.

Current Employee - Front Desk Agent in Spokane, WA (US)

I have been working at Interstate Hotels full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The job provides benefits to full time employees.

    Cons

Benefits cost way to much for an employee to afford good coverage. No chance of advancement cause they promote friends of higher ups. Management doesn't reward loyalty or treat long time employees with any respect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show your employees that have been loyal and stayed with the company for years so respect. Even if it isn't advancement where possible at least think of them first with regaurds to schedules and holidays
