    I worked at IBM full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Flexible hours and ability to work from home.
    I worked with some very intelligent and talented people. (Until they wised-up and found better employment.)

    Cons

    IBM is now a gigantic money-generating machine for its top executives and largest investors. Employees are treated like disposable parts. Relentless focus on earnings growths has broken the company.
    Raises and bonuses are rare.
    Low job security. Employees may be let go regardless of absolute job performance. (Hello stacked ranking)
    Career advancement is difficult unless you don't mind being a spineless yes-man. They are looking for overseers, not leaders.
    Morale could not be lower.
    The company likes to talk about innovation but rarely invests in it.
    Demands, responsibilities, and obligations increase while teams are reduced and salaries stagnate.
    Products are falling behind in technology and quality.
    Excessive processes are used in lieu of common sense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Good luck on getting SammyP's $225M payout when you go. The company will have been gutted by that point.

    Pros

    Cutting edge technology and some good managers.

    Cons

    No pay increases, no bonuses, no work location flexibility any more. The CEO present and former killing the company with an Earning per share target of 20$ by end of 2015 ( was a 5 year plan). Jobs off shored for anyone in North America (the US has lost 50K jobs that were moved to BRIC countries. Very low morale and endless job cuts

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop the greed and start investing in people (IP capital ) as happy people are better employees.
    42 Billion in share buy backs using borrowed money is not a good idea.. but I guess by screwing the workers you will get those bonuses (greed greed greed)

    Pros

    IBM offers you (sometimes) a chance to change teams when times are tough. it also offers a lot of diversity in the workforce, Some work flexibility and decent privacy rules.
    When you are in a struggling team, you can leave to a better team, but then you have to go through your management which may make life tough for you.

    Cons

    Could be overwhelming, and the Culture is very rigid, it is a gigantic ship that steers very slowly and does not respond to input from individuals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Nothing really, The problems with management is built-in the culture, if they changed the company will not be the same, it is a 'take it or leave it' approach.

    Pros

    IBM is good to have on your resume.
    Fairly competative benefits.

    Cons

    IBM has lost its way since it bought PWC and adopted the Partner Model. Now these glorified salesmen suck the profit out of the company with little consideration for those that deliver the customer's requirements.
    International relationshiips between IBM companies is counter productive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Start focusing on the customer and employees to deliver quality products and solutions. Develop an equitable bonus/profit sharing plan that recognises those other tha partners like you had 15 years ago.

    Pros

    I can honestly say that many of the best people that I have ever worked with were from IBM.

    Cons

    do not get comfortable doing what you are doing ... you will be asked to do less with more. you will inherit other projects and not receive backfill for people moving onto newer projects. It demonstrates that leadership generally is not able to balance the product portfolio or make decisions about what is important.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Ditch the 2015 plan and chasing shareholder value over all other things.
    Break the culture of sycophancy.
    Stop encouraging people to switch jobs every 2 years ... no one invests in a maintainable business because they know it will not be their problem long term.

    Pros

    Excellent working conditions with flexible schedules, leaves of absence when requested and flexible day to day schedules. Strong BYOD support programs. Solid education and training opportunities and internal networking collaboration tools. Quality of colleagues unprecedented in the industry. Excellent research scientists.

    Cons

    Work life balance a challenge due to heavy workloads and expectations. Limited potential for promotion especially for woman. Maniacal focus on EPS earnings per share at the expense of investing in new offerings that clients are interested in, improved delivery capabilities and overall solutions to improve customer satisfaction has unfortunately reduced the ability for employees to generate new revenues. This has impacted employee morale and the corporate culture.

    Pursue a balanced set of business metrics with EPS in the mix

    rewarding because of the people you get to work with. technology exposure is great because of the quality of the contracts which are signed. work from home is a bonus.

    Have access to the bigger IBM ... lots of interesting work

    Cons

    Too many management ... not enough senior technical people.
    Loss a lot of good senior technical staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    People is your resources. Retain the good technical staff.
    Salary adjustment constantly less then inflation is killing your people. We all have family to feed too.
    Workload leads to stress; Underpay leads to frustration; net result is people left for other company even when we like what we are doing.
