Can be interesting, hours are antisocial and long.

Border Force Officer (Current Employee) London, England (UK)

    ProsThe salary is very good.
Work with an extremely diverse workforce.
    Excellent pension scheme.
    Opportunity to join different teams.
Undertaking casework is interesting - use problem-solving and analysis skills and employ sound judgement when making decisions.

    ConsExtremely anti-social hours.
This leads to a poor work-life balance.
    Work can sometimes be monotonous.
Can sometimes feel a bit nepotistic, and success can sometimes be based on who you know rather than what you know.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a keener interest in the well-being of your staff. Cutting breaks etc does not positively affect morale or efficiency.

    Public sector at its best

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsOne of the times top 50 places for women to work for last 3 years

A huge range of jobs - ranging from operational roles in HM Passport Office, UK Visas, immigration enforcement and Border Force aswell as roles dealing with counter terrorism , crime and policing and HQ roles such as, strategy, policy, finance, commercial etc

It has an incredibly diverse workforce in every sense of the word

The department has two vital overarching objectives -to promote economic growth and to protect the UK - they are both objectives which make you feel proud to be contributing to.

You progress on merit and there is always opportunities to develop

    It's nothing like yes minister!

ConsYou have to be realistic about the roles you can do - don't choose to be a Border Force Officer if you can only work 9-5 : that's not when most planes land or ships dock

In times of austerity and even at the best of times you are not going to get huge pay rises. Ever.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you do - as they listen to us all the time and do take action

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Typical government department

Service Manager (Current Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsLots of support for maintaining work/life balance, training and ongonig development is good, opportunities for moving to different roles if you play the game right

ConsObviously it's very political, some decisions are set by ministers so you have no input, salary progression is limited, there is a media/social stigma to being a civil servant.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrust your staff more, take more responsibility for your area of concern and actually stand up to suppliers - they need us more than we need them!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Working in a home-based job solutions can help your family and children.

Office Manager (Current Employee) New Cebu (Philippines)

ProsOne of the best reasons why working in the home office is best for me because you don't have to spend any money in the fare, gasoline, food and deal with the traffic jam vehicles outside. You save a lot of money in doing this.

ConsSome that make you down sometimes is that you need to go out sometimes for your basic needs for you to choose what you want to buy but you can't make it because you doesn't have enough money to spend for.

Advice to Senior ManagementSome advices is that they should provide a salary with a home office job so that they can also move and improve their selves in working the environment. Or else no one will work with them anymore.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
