I worked at HNTB Companies as an intern for more than a year

    Pros

All of the people I worked with in Kansas City and talked to around the country were incredible and passionate about their work. I loved being in that atmosphere daily.

    Cons

The leadership of the company isn't stable and isn't always transparent. There are nuances it took me a year to notice, but negativity toward the leadership was definitely obvious.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know your employees. Do a bit more traveling and understand why they work for you in the first place.

    Pros

Very talented employees who are dedicated to the employer, the client and invested in the projects. Many roles are available, the more responsibility you ask for and capably handle, the more you can be assigned. Lots of opportunities. You have an opportunity to grow within the company and the company gives bonuses and hosts events to show their appreciation. Great experience!

    Cons

Long work hours but that is normal in the industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Richard Ridings sets an excellent example of what upper management should be - in tune with the project, the staff and assists both in acheiving not only project success but sets the bar for excellence.

    Pros

Company is the leader in Electronic Toll Collection consulting services and is held in high regard by the entire industry.

    Cons

Indoctrination and training of new employees into the company could be improved with a formal process that explains the company's reporting and accounting requirements.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Establish goals and provide sufficient training to new employees so they completely understand the inner workings of the company before placing in live environment.

    Pros

Salary and benefits are excellent, but justify how they treat staff

    Cons

Know that despite all the talk about "investing" in you, your department, new lines of business, long term growth, another 100 years...the second your utilization is off by a percent or two, there are calls being made and spreadsheets on the most "efficient" way to let you go.

Horrible PMs whose projects did not make money were allowed to run free all over the country, spending both client and project money, resulting on a loss that will be magically covered bc they are part of the "good old boy's club".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The executive management team only cares about making themselves money in the present and stock price, who cares if they ruin in for future generations. Retire and let new blood take over. How many millions do you need when you are already so old.

    Pros

HNTB has some fantastic people around the nation who are passionate about transportation and infrastructure. Competitive compensation and opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Definitely a company struggling with the changes in the marketplace. In many ways, it still is structured like an antiquated geography-based partnership with political infighting between offices stifling growth and raising costs. Strategically the company is 30 years behind and is really controlled by a single individual. Incredibly risk-averse contractually, to the point that it is damaging them in the marketplace compared to other more sophisticated competitors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good hard look at the corporate structure and blow it up. The Infrastructure model of geographic profit/cost centers impedes maximizing revenue and profit by job and type. Focus on putting the right resources on a job rather than hoarding revenue for an office by utilizing ill-fitting staff for assignments. Take a page from Ford and adopt a "One HNTB" strategy before there isn't an HNTB.

I worked at HNTB Companies as an intern

    Pros

Get to work on statement bridges. Work with some brilliant people.

    Cons

Seemed like everyone lived and breathed work. Everyone is so stressed out and worried about their own work it is hard for them to find time to help a young engineer. I don't blame them though because it seemed like everyone was overworked.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do better managing amount of employees, seems like too everyone was way over worked.

    Pros

Great local team, with lots of resources at our disposal. There's a real sense of pride in our work, and projects are very collaborative. Comps and benefits are very competitive.

    Cons

Large company can be intimidating to some people. There's the typical bureaucracy of a bigger company too. No formal mentoring program. Upper management on the Board is pretty far removed from project managers who deliver the work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The best way to increase the bottom line earnings is to decrease the financial pressures and encourage local leaders to pursue top talent in order to grow the number of employees and the contracts they can bring in the door.

    Pros

HNTB celebrates 100 years in business this year! What a great testimony to sustainability!!!

With Rob Slimp as the CEO there is a renewed emphasis on delivering value to clients, investing in the professional development of all HNTB employees and outreach by senior leadership to strong performing offices.

Current company strategies are on track for profitable growth for the next five years and beyond!!!

    Cons

Work life balance can sometimes be a challenge with all the great career building opportunities at HNTB.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep employees "in the know" of company decisions, key initiatives, key hires/investments, etc.

Invest in HNTB employees 365 days a year...Don't reduce investments in quarter four.
