Current Employee - Senior Hardware Design Engineer  in  Farmington Hills, MI (US)
Current Employee - Senior Hardware Design Engineer in Farmington Hills, MI (US)

    Pros

    1. Getting to work on Infotainment systems, which is the most versatile systems in the vehicle.
    2. Challenging work and potential to move if you are ever recognized for your work value. Which can be difficult depending on if you have the right boss (one with a backbone) and if it is the right phase of the moon for Harman.

    Cons

    1. Quality is not controlled and/or communicated properly.
    2. Software and hardware do not work collaboratively.
    3. When there is a problem, people there throw it over to wall to the next person.
    4. New technology/ideas are not really welcome or appreciation
    5. No management appreciation or recognition.
    6. No bonus offered to employees even though the CEO is one of the highest paid
    7. No appreciation for products. The CEO only shows his face when absolutely necessary, even when there is a product/contract rolling out that is well over $1 billion in revenue...come on be a leader!
    8. No employee value, even when you step outside of your job in a daily basis that is still not enough for any type of recognition. At least with the boss I had.
    9. Not staying ahead of the customer and competition, Harman is 2 to 3 steps behind. Just playing catch up when a product is in the quoting phases.
    10. One of the most stressful jobs you will most likely have. Along with pay that is not comparable to other companies in the market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Restructuring and or training needs to happen to get a grip on what is going on.
CEO expects to draw talented people in thinking management people are the key. Hate to break it to you, but with how things are setup currently you are drawing talent away from you

    Pros

Harman has great brands and latest product technology. A very diverse team of talented people working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where an entrepreneurial attitude is rewarded.

    Cons

Paid holidays and health benefits seem to lag the industry. Automotive activities in Farmington Hills are spread out amongst multiple buildings limiting potential efficiencies that are required to support our lean resource structure . Harman has experienced significant growth through M&A's which has grown our revenues but fragmented our organizational structure, systems and processes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to be careful that our sales growth does not outpace our resource constraints and manufacturing capacity.

    Pros

There are good people at the worker bee level that try their best to keep up.

    Cons

Dinesh is a basket case and incredibly selfish. The dynamic of the Stamford "Iron Fist" paired with the top leaders of the world wide organization would surprise any of their customers. Forget being innovative, sticking up for the good guy or doing anything the right way. Cheapening products and little salary increases, while Dinesh rolls in the money. They keep expanding buildings and dividing up the teams- collaboration is little. Get ready to have projects dumped on you, doing busy work because upper leadership want you to do things 300x over or slice the data over and over. No traction to move forward, it's always about who is the big guy with the loudest bark. Glass ceiling for women, take a look at how many women are in leadership roles compared to the men. It's disgusting.

    Pros

Well known brands, experience looks good on resume. Interesting, challenging work.
    Pride in working for company.
Previously had "Disney-like" culture driven by Sidney Harman's personal vision that the employee was the key to the company success.

    Cons

In application for position, biggest concern of company was relocation expenses. Reinforced in every conversation. Entire hiring decision was based on expected pay out of expenses and not best qualified candidate. Sr. Hiring Manager and Randstad outsource HR recruiter appeared pressured if too much/anything was spent on relocation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stamford headquarters is top heavy with unneeded executives.
Restructure at top in order to hire more middle, day to day management employees who make direct contributions. Sidney Harman's mantra should be re-adapted and reinforced.
Respond to employees and candidates when contacting HR managers and representatives.
Company realized after 5 years that Wipro outsource model was deficient.
Off to a promising start with new consumer contact center back in USA at Northridge CA.

    Pros

1 in 8 months you get some good work to do that's all good there is rest of 7 months you are only doing Bug Fixing

    Cons

Harman Pro one of the three business unit of Harman has no money neither for your salary nor for infrastructure which you need for your work.
Giving a laptop to an employee is like giving you 30% bonus for them what they don't understand that this is a basic requirement. Pro BU's director is from Services company and so is every other team lead. They all still think they are in a services company. They call themselves Product company and then follow Service company culture.
Work life balance is also not so good.
Just to give you an idea hike here never goes above 10% for seniors and 15% for fresher. This too only if you are very good at buttering.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire HPro BU's director and his chamchas for a start.
Recruit some good guys with actual leadership skill .

Current Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Bangalore (India)

    Pros

Good salary package only during joining
After that hike will be given only if you are close to manager and say yes to everything he says [ even if he says put that glass over there]

    Cons

    1. No Career path defined, only if you bring this issue they will think of that.
    2. some people [although don't know anything] think tha they know every aspect of automotive domain in this world.
    3. Leads and managers have very bossy attitude and would blame you for everything.
    4. Company does not provide tools, and resources to everyone..you need to beg, borrow and steal..

I really do not have words to describe the work-culture in Harman, people specially managers do not have any professional ethics...only thing they know is "Make it Happen"...how and in what way they don''t know...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Learn to be equal to everyone.
    2. Provide opportunity to everyone so that they can prove their potential.
    3. Have some transparency.
