"Ad hoc" is the name of the game, in all things...if you like staff aug, this is your place

Manager (Current Employee)
Alexandria, VA (US)

I have been working at Grant Thornton International full-time for more than a year

ProsWork/life balance is pretty good. All staff is generally friendly. Great holiday party.

ConsFederal practice tries to figure things out as they go vs. putting together a discernible strategy. Low-end consulting - 99.9% of work is staff aug. "Not invented here" mentality is pervasive. Collaboration feels like an assembly line process - people focus on their respective "part," but don't focus on the overall "machine" being built. Continual "restructuring" of practice leaves feeling of utter confusion, in everything. Career management practices are a joke, and change each year.

Serious and professional culture which expects a lot from their employees, but compensates accordingly.

Good environment with smart and helpful colleagues

Senior Consultant (Current Employee)
Alexandria, VA (US)

I have been working at Grant Thornton International

Pros-Private firm
-Good benefits
-Small compared to BAH, Deloitte, etc..
-Easy to talk to senior management
-Very quick IT support and finance services

Cons-No standardization of deliverable materials
-Won't pay for parking at home office
-Won't pay for parking on client site
-No Downtown DC home office

Advice to Senior Management-Please pay for parking at home office and at client site. It's not cool that we have to pay money to go into the office.

Good Learning experience

Audit Intern (Former Employee)
McLean, VA (US)

I worked at Grant Thornton International

ProsLearned alot good start to get into public accounting. The firm as a whole doesn't quite have the resources that the BIG 4 have but it is a friendly and comfortable work environment with good experience on interesting clients.

ConsPerformance feed back tends to get back to you relatively late in the game hurting your ability to fix your mistakes and issues in the work place.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake your performance feedback especially in the internship program more timely and effective. So that interns may be able to actually address the issues they have in the work place.

Global Public Sector

Manager (Current Employee)
Washington, DC (US)

I have been working at Grant Thornton International

ProsThe staff are friendly and cordial to each other and you virtually always have the ability to work at your home office.

ConsThe work is not interesting or rewarding, it is hard to leave a project even after a year or more, and the staff turnover is quite high.

Advice to Senior ManagementI work in the government practice, which has no synergy at all with the accounting firm. The CEO is not relevant to our work and does not show much respect for it.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

A company with a great mix of people

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Alexandria, VA (US)

I have been working at Grant Thornton International

Pros1) There are some really great people at this company - motivated, smart and dynamic
2) The GT culture is hard to beat - social events include sporting events, many happy hours, picnics...
3) You can request tickets in the Verizon Center box for multiple events
4) All hands meetings at the country club are always nice

Cons1) The company is growing fast and cutting back on some of the small things - happy hours etc.
2) The annual performance review process is not fair to all and the real goals are not given to you up front - it's kind of hard to meet or exceed goals you never knew about. Same goes for getting promoted - nothing is spelled out up front.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease revisit the annual performance review process.
