Contract position with Google

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Google as a contractor

ProsI got to work with some of the most amazing people, on an innovative new product.

ConsI would strongly recommend against a contract position. Fact, they just aren't as invested in your development as they would be if you were an employee. I would recommend a full-time employee position at another company versus a contract position at Google. Do not accept a contract position with the mindset that you will be converted. The conversion rate is shockingly low.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy managers were alarmingly inexperienced. One was brilliant behind a computer, but had no clue how to interact with people, that's a problem when you are managing a team of over 20. My other manager (we were rotated between managers so often it was like a merry go-round)never took accountability for anything and was so inept, I could have done his job better.

Best company to start your career in.

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Mountain View, CA (US)

I worked at Google full-time for more than 5 years

ProsVery data driven culture.Engineering is respected and heard a lot. Get to work on state of art technologies and hone variety of skills.

ConsEasy to get lost in the crowd. So many extraordinary people surrounding can sometimes be overwhelming and get to your nerves. But the company has become so big that nobody would care if you just came to work to eat, gossip and take your paycheck.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more selective in who you hire and be ready to let them go if you have to.

Great place to build your career in sales - if as a contractor

Leads Development (Current Employee)
Dublin, Dublin (Ireland)

I have been working at Google as a contractor for less than a year

Prosfreebies, free food, free snacks pool gym etc... and decent salary - also great atmosphere - but i have to say as sales goes there are higher paying companies, although there less benefits in other companies - it depends what you want : benefits vs salary -

Consnot really just there are higher paying companies, contract workers have little hope of permanent position, or commission and must wait 3 months if renewing

Marketing manager

Product Marketing Manager (Former Employee)
Sydney (Australia)

I worked at Google full-time for more than a year

ProsThe office is great. You get free meals/snacks, massages in the office, and a great work environment. There are also a lot of educational opportunities and trainings so you feel like you're always learning and growing as an employee.

ConsExpectations are very high and people can be very competitive depending on your field. It can be stressful. In addition, it seems most people work round the clock and I found myself on email nights/weekends, not because I had to be, but I felt that it was the norm. It can take over your life a bit.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would recommend more fairly giving perf. It seems that the calibrations for people's final perf scores are based mainly on hitting a certain average for each team which can be very unfair.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
