Current Employee – been working at General Motors full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – Motivating to diagnose problems that the average tech can't. Enjoy getting paid buy the job, you get paid what you are worth. If you are making decent money, you deserve to be proud. I love GM cars and trucks, I get to repair them everyday.
Cons – Labour times (time allotted for pay) is getting ridiculous. One half of an hour for a job that takes one hour or an hour and a half. This creates a lot of extra stress and anxiety, not conducive to doing a good job. The technicians feel a great deal of resentment.
Advice to Senior Management – A more accurate and reasonable time study needs to be conducted before publishing warranty labour times. Dealers have invested a tremendous amount of money in training for technicians. Warranty labour times are forcing good technicians to work in the aftermarket. As a result, the strong technicians are leaving the dealer and the weak ones have no choice but to stay. I recently have left the dealer for a large aftermarket franchise, some of my customers have followed me because nobody at the dealer can't diagnose electrical problems. What is happening is the tech staying at the dealer are there because they can't survive anywhere else. Is that who you want working on your product.?

Former Employee – worked at General Motors
Pros – The best things I liked at GM was the good pay we made and the benefits and the holiday time we got.We had the opportunity to learn new and better jobs as time went on and get to work with many nice and interesting people. It was also a safe place to work.
Cons – The thing that most people do not like is the monotony of doing the same thing over and over again. Some of the jobs are hard on the body and over time cause injury and pain. Also as time went by the work was increased and the speed you had to work at to complete your job was very demanding. The way people were treated by supervision was not always proper and not done with respect.
Advice to Senior Management – The workers in the plants where I worked generally gave a very good effort in performing their jobs to make a good vehicle for GM.These people need to treated with more respect for their work and not be pressured by management. The atmosphere at work over the last number of years has not been healthy and that can affect the way the product is made.

Current Employee – been working at General Motors
Pros – People are great to work with. Flexible for vacations and very nice location.
Cons – Building needs attention. Little sign of advancements or getting away from contract to receive higher salaries or benefits.
Advice to Senior Management – I understand GM has gone through some major restructuring. But I believe there should be some incentive for contract employees to feel more passionate about the company and the brands. Why should I commit to a GM vehicle when GM can't even commit to me?

Current Employee – been working at General Motors
Pros – The best part of the job is that you get to be a part of a car being built. If u work at CREC - hands on engineering and testing is the best part.
Cons – Job security is the only thing I hate about GM - the auto industry is brutal.
Advice to Senior Management – Must focus on addressing reviews from other individuals, and focus on selling cars based on facts and not just on adds that show the car being driven around, there is alot that GM cars have to offer.

Former Employee – worked at General Motors
Pros – Overall GM of Canada was a good place to work. Initially provided great benefits package and opportunity for training. However due to economic times things have changed for empoloyees at GM.
Cons – Old school thinking and management styles
Too many layers of middle management
Very little room for career advancement
Unionized hourly labour force generally dificult to work with which inhibits growth and advancement of company
Old boys club
Advice to Senior Management – GM needs to develop and retain new leaders of tomorrow. Too much emphasis on the way things were done. A complete overhaul of the company is required by someone outside the industry.

Former Employee – worked at General Motors
Pros – -great pay in comparison to other companies(unjustly for what we actually do)
-flexible schedule
-sometimes interesting work can be given, but majority of the time you are paper pushing
Cons – -you feel like just a small wheel in a huge machine
-instability of the company can be disheartening, and lower morale
-unions protect the people that shouldn't be protected
Advice to Senior Management – -get younger and hire some more new grads
-have salaries that reflect level of responsibility, and the salaries are just high in general for some of the work that is being done
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
