I have been working at Gartner full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Work with some of the brightest, sharpest people on the planet. Support, professionalism, teamwork and many resources to support employees, especially sales. Competitive compensation, interesting people, and you get to feel like you are having a positive impact with clients.

    Cons

Internal processes, plannings, strategy, reports can be very tedious and time consuming. Level of satisfaction often depends on direct area manager and how supportive and engaged they are. Very time consuming place where there is always more to do than you have time and energy for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Territories are shrinking and some would argue, have been tapped out. Increasing double digit sales growth will only be sustainable for limited time

I have been working at Gartner full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Career opportunity - the sky is the limit if you work hard enough and are mobile
    Pay for performance
    Culture
    Appreciation of efforts

    Cons

I really can't think of any - great PTO, great health plan, great working locations. There is personal growth available at all levels, but you have to make it work for you - i.e. don't expect anything to be handed on a pl;ate

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the great work - full of inspirational leaders

    Pros

Great atmosphere. Fantastic value proposition and wonderful training. This really is a phenomenal place to work. You are exposed to many facets of the IT industry and work with the most senior leaders within your accounts.

    Cons

"New to Gartner" boss was a struggle that made the negatives outweigh the positives aspects of the company / job.

I have been working at Gartner full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

At Gartner you work with brilliant people and sit at the cutting edge of IT. People are supportive and collaborative. Things change all the time and change quickly, so you need to be OK with change to do well here. HR encouarges people to develop and move to new opportunities around the compnay. Gartner's bought up some competitors and has a very strong financial health. Its also known for integrity.

    Cons

For an IT company, systems investments are not as good as you might expect. Things get bureucratic sometimes. Performance reviews follow a stack-rank kind of system, which creates competiton and requires everyone to keep developing their skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work at home is discouraged for some locations and business units, That's s shame since we are a global company we ought to have access to a global talent pool.

I have been working at Gartner full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great pay if you are motivated. Doesn't suck to go to work every day in that you aren't micro-managed. One of the BEST leaders I've ever seen is Nate Swan running the SMB program, and with that guy, you can be sure the company is going somewhere and there will be plenty of opportunities to move up. Great (and I do mean GREAT) food for really cheap ($5-$6 lunches. Jim is the man.). Lots of company outings. Workout room with heavy weights.

    Cons

Lately, they've pretty much hired an entire campus full of frat bros and sorority sisters that can't hold a conversation without going back to the glory days. Not everyone is like this but it certainly ruins it for all the people who are there and have personalities, values and self respect. Seen a lot of newbies put on a face while speaking to someone and then bad mouth them the second they turn your back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't accept people being selfish workers. I've seen a lot of people ask for help and get a cold shoulder from another employee. Even if someone is the greatest salesperson in the company, if someone asks them for help and they deny the other person that help-FIRE THEM. One person doing great on a team and the other 5 barely hitting their quota is not helping you. What helps you is when that same person still does great and then goes on to help the other 5 kill it. People that are selfish are viruses to the great culture Gartner has and is striving to keep as it grows.

I worked at Gartner full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very interesting field (IT research and advisory services).
    Outstanding product
    Talented personnel.
Strong Corporate leadership at the HQ level.

    Cons

Sometimes erratic and inexperienced management get installed at the local office level.
Comp Plan inadequacies will likely make it difficult to retain the better salespeople
High turnover (probably because of the above)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When a local office experiences huge amounts of turn-over - please notice it and take corrective action (replace the local leadership before they drive away all the people with talent and other options).

I have been working at Gartner as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

The best way I can describe Gartner is as a place that people come back to. Many employees here have worked here for an extended period of time uninterrupted, but many have gone on to other opportunities only to return to Gartner. The atmosphere is positive, the people are intelligent and driven.

    Cons

The contracting agency that Gartner uses is inefficient and compensates poorly - low pay to contractors, few to no benefits. There is a dearth of interesting full time entry-level positions.
