I worked at Florida International University full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great place to start working as a full-time employee.

    Cons

After taking on a supervisory role, growing further in the university can be a challenge for young professionals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look to your young professionals to hone their growth and development. Experienced employees must learn to change their traditional office cultures to benefit the university in furthering their success. Managers need to spread their delegating to more employees rather than giving multiple responsibilities to young professionals.

I worked at Florida International University as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Relaxed environment. People are nice to work with. Quality of faculties are getting better according to records of new coming professors. Does not pay that well, but ok and getting better.

    Cons

As a researcher, one needs better admin supports. Many times mistakes happened and unnecessarily delayed the work process. Funding is something you have to fight for. It impacts a lot on research quality when one has to focus on finding funds too often.

I have been working at Florida International University full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Many opportunities. There are tons of different departments to work for on campus. This is both good and bad. Most departments have fantastic leadership, but some are lacking. The hours are generally 9 to 5.

    Cons

When you're dealing with students, it's almost always the case that they're going to ask you a question that cannot by answered by your department and they will have to speak with 2+ other departments to get a complete answer. This is frustrating to the student and thus they take out their frustration on you. Unfortunately, the university is so divided in it's functions that even things that should logically be handled together are separate departments in separate buildings.

Former Employee - Graduate Research Assistant in Miami, FL (US)

I worked at Florida International University as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

I was a research assistant for 2 years and was still getting a decent pay and tuition benefits. With yearly employee evaluation and a lot of skill development and learning opportunities, you can never get behind if you're focus and there to learn.

    Cons

The employee system is relatively slow. If you've any problem it might take more than usual time to solve it or even get it addressed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to spend some time and resources in improving the management system, typically those departments who are responsible for addressing the problems of employees, specially students.
