I have been working at Federal Government full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Pension
    Benefits
    Work Life Balance
Training for junior staff - but not as much as before

    Cons

    Bureaucratic / red tape
    Highly political - internally
Highly influenced by central agency politics
    Static environment
Deadwood tolerated - especially if they know how to play the political game
    Peter principle
    Favouritism encouraged
Zero support for managers who need to manage under performers. Under-performers are molly coddled by HR - and managers have to live with the consequences
Managers who have risen due to seniority but have no training or skills in leading people
    Risk averseness

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Foster innovation & creativity
    - Learn to manage inter-generational teams better
    - Enable risk management
    - Fairly reward superior performers
    - Get rid of under performers
    - Do not be blind to toxic managers

I have been working at Federal Government full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good salary, 37.5h a week, zero stress

    Cons

No challenge, feeling worthless, advancing in you career without feeling you are getting actually better. Doesn't let you use or develop any judgement. Too much red tape and games being played.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go get some real experience from the private sector first..

I have been working at Federal Government

    Pros

Flexibility and a chance to continue to grow as a person. The more you can handle, the more they will offer you.

    Cons

The bureaucracy can get to anyone. In such a large organisation, one must be prepared to live with the many rules that are applicable. Then again, this is the people's money and it should be spent wise.y.

I have been working at Federal Government full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Salary and benefits are pretty comfortable and you get decent vacation and sick days, but that is about to change

    Cons

Strick hierarchy can make you claustrophobic. Most of the time, you have nothing to do and when you do, its to review for the 14th time a paper that will eventually lead nowhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more risk, be more open to ideas that come from "below".
