I have been working at Federal Government full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Salary and benefits are pretty comfortable and you get decent vacation and sick days, but that is about to change
Cons – Strick hierarchy can make you claustrophobic. Most of the time, you have nothing to do and when you do, its to review for the 14th time a paper that will eventually lead nowhere.
Advice to Senior Management – Take more risk, be more open to ideas that come from "below".
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

I worked at Federal Government
Pros – Excellent benefits, great work-life balance, job security, if you want to work and study, this will be a place to work.
Cons – not for the ambitious professionals who want a fast-paced, result-oriented environment. Remuneration is competitive for entry-level positions but there is no performance bonuses or profit sharing so incentives to work harder are not there. Nature of the job is bureaucratic.
Advice to Senior Management – Lessons to be learnt from the private sector on how to reward performance, initiative and. Less bureaucracy and approvals. Less paperwork and more results.

I have been working at Federal Government
Pros – Generally stable employment, pretty good work life balance, overall benefits package is good, specifically the defined benefits pension plan, flexible hrs of work
Cons – The thing I hate the most is that there is not a strong link between compensation and impact. In other words you could be contributing a lot compared to the guy down the hall, but you will get the exact same compensation. However, this short term imbalance is generally compensated with longer term job promotion. Second thing I hate is the short term benefits politicians take by unjustly trashing public sector employees.
Advice to Senior Management – Long term trend should be to outsource wherever possible the operations of government while keeping core policy development within government.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

I have been working at Federal Government
Pros – The work week is 37,5 hours long. Good work-life balance.
Cons – Working for department of national defence, the worst thing to deal with at work is the incompetancy of the military managers. You get to work for managers who don't have any knowledge of what they have to manage which leads to a very frustrating work environment. Managers usually can't make the difference between a good an bad employe which leads to lack of recognition for your efforts and lots of politics and manipulation going on in the organization.
Advice to Senior Management – Let military managers manage what they know (military operations) and hire professionnal managers to lead the teams of specialized professionnals working for the organization.
