I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The salary was quite impressive, my fellow store managers were quite pleasant and those who cared about their jobs were very helpful in times of need.

    Cons

To received no real training for what was expected of me on a daily basis. I was given two weeks worth of semi training when I was suppose to have received four. I learned everything that I needed to know on my own through trial and error or common sense. Field management turn over is high which makes for a very flexible and adaptable attitude. I was always being retrained on the "proper family dollar way" but it was different with each person.

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I started as a stock person making minimum wage. In a short four months I was promoted to assistant manager. This company is good for those just starting out in retail management. They are always in need of managers and would rather promote from within then hire outside.

    Cons

Most of the locations are not in good areas which means high theft. The company does not provide any security outside of the camera system. The budget they give to run the store always leaves the GM working 70+ hours per week. With that budget you don't have room to pay employees there worth or hire enough staff which is the cause of high employee theft.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are not allowed to take major holidays off and some locations are required to be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. There are always changes happening to make sure you have a strong Assistant to help with these changes. If you have a family you will never be able to work normal hours so you have to be willing to miss out on some personal things

I have been working at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Fast paced, rarely doing the same thing twice. Easy to show how focused on moving up, with many stores in most cities there is always room for those who want promoted.

    Cons

Low pay, though on par and even better than some other retailers out there. Lacking a lot of benefits of others tho.

Former Employee - Store Development Project Manager in Phoenix, AZ (US)

I worked at Family Dollar Stores full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

My immediate regional director is a man of real integtrity. He understands the real pulse of the business. Many of the Corp officials including HR live in a completely different world. It appears they are only worried about there own political correctness instead of reallly understaniding of the real problems out in the field. Family Dollar claims to be a Compelling place to work. That is not a true statement. I would like to speak with Howard Levine personally.

    Cons

In the position I held, I was was working almost 7 days a week, 24-7 even on your days off. Real ability of help from the corp office wasn"t really there much. THose who tried should be commended but the high officials, Tina Fisher, Collin Mcginnis I would not praise at all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do real training instead of lip service type training. Reading your training off of Family Dollar universtiy is one thing but actual training is more important. Corp office people generally do not understnad the real day to day world
