Loved the job, my coworkers and the users. Management, not so much!

Air Traffic Control Specialist (Former Employee)
Columbia, SC (US)

I worked at FAA full-time for more than 10 years

ProsSalary, coworkers, benefits, job security.

ConsLabor and management hated one another. Working all three shifts in one week, every week. I never had a Saturday or Sunday weekend for 16 years. You have to retain the same medical clearance as a pilot. Mandatory retirement on your 56th birthday.

Advice to Senior ManagementYour focus should be to support the controllers that serve the users. If you don't come to work, the system doesn't even slow down. If the controllers don't come to work, there is no system.

I developed Screening Information Requests and solicited bids/proposals for research services and supplies.

Buyer (Former Employee)
Philadelphia, PA (US)

I worked at FAA full-time for more than 10 years

ProsA good reason to work for the FAA was learning how to solicit service and supply-time contracts for information technology, construction and research contracts with colleges and hospitals. I learned how to administer assigned purchase orders, including change order processing, ensuring compliance with contractual terms and applicable regulations, invoice processing and verification, and performance evaluation; ensuring supplier compliance in a cost-effective, timely, and responsive manner.

ConsI was unable to find any cons for working at the FAA. Everything I learned how to perform in service and supply contracting was a positive experience.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy personnel advise to management for hiring someone with my experience in procurement is very diverse and I would be a good fit for the hospital.

Just retired after 20 years in Electronics with FAA.

Communications Technician (Former Employee)
Houston, TX (US)

I worked at FAA full-time for more than 10 years

ProsExcellent pay and benefits. Liberal time off, great health plan. A lot of paid training. I worked for a private sector company 15 years. The FAA concentrates on quality work over production. Good work environment.

ConsPromotion is by who you know and pander to, not knowledge and ability.

Advice to Senior ManagementReevaluate how technicians are promoted and managers selected.

This seemed like a good idea at the time

Engineer (Current Employee)
Washington, DC (US)

I have been working at FAA full-time for more than 10 years

ProsUnusual to get 1:1 Comp time or 1.5:1 Overtime as an engineer
Flexible schedule
Government Benefits and Vacation
An actual pension plan (thought it isn't what it once was)

ConsA lot of bad frontline managers
Sequestration hasn't hit as hard as some places but the belt tightens again every year.
It costs a little piece of my soul every day.
No obvious way to move up the Payband since step increases were removed.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe constant reorganizations are a distraction. Pick an organizational structure and figure out how to optimize it. There are advantages and disadvantages to any plan but there is only chaos from constant, wholesale change.

ProsThe FAA is a great place to work to balance work and life. You won't be killing yourself here to get ahead. You can take time off pretty easily.

ConsIt's the government, bureaucracy at its finest.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay for training, stop letting the technicians stagnate.
