Edison, NJ (US)

Former Employee – worked at Express LLC part-time for more than a year

Pros- Great for Type-A personalities in retail
- Staff becomes family
- decent employees discount with extra off at the start of quarters

Cons- environment can be stressful and demanding
- unrealistic standards
- long closes
- Work/Life balance decreases heavily with promotion

Advice to Senior ManagementCompetitors pay associates more or the same for less work. Give more hours to small stores with high traffic and volume to retain staff's top talent. Also, give yearly raises when the associate reaches that milestone, and NOT once in every may. The pay and work is not worth it.

ProsGreat place to develop skills in the retail world. Has great training programs and commitment to better internal candidates for promotions. Experience gained at Express also weighs heavily on your resume in a positive way for future jobs with other retailers.

ConsSometimes you feel to pressured to buy buy buy constantly to help make numbers.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemember the Core Values of the company.

Current Employee – been working at Express LLC part-time for less than a year

ProsThe employee discounts are totally worth it. Plus meeting lots of people is a great benefit. The work isn't hard at all.

ConsNo chairs at all in the back! Chairs would be nice if you spend your whole shift folding clothes. Shoplifters are irritating since you really can't confront them.

ProsI was promoted very fast, I work with great people, and I get a decent discount

ConsNo real cons for a retail job except there are other retail store that pay a lot more. My only real issues is that my sm is a control freak who still manages to lack follow through on important tasks such as payroll issues.

ProsI really do make a difference in people's lives. I work in a fast-paced enviroment, so there is never a dull moment. The associates are amazing. The previous SM was not good. The current SM is a world of a difference and when the right people are working, it makes everything smooth.

ConsLittle incentives. Pay is not close to what it should be for all the work that keeps the store going. Lack of pay for basic associates means a high turnover rate, but we do recruit the best. It is rare to leave when you're scheduled to leave.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay the associates more than the minimum.

Arlington, VA (US)

Current Employee – been working at Express LLC part-time for less than a year

ProsI enjoy my time at Express, and I enjoyed learning a few things about how to put together an outfit

ConsThe hours are in the most inconvenient times of the day. As a student, my total time commuting takes up a good portion of my day, and what I'm paid barely covers the transport cost to and fro. There is always a pressure to get NEXT, although it doesn't seem to correlate to anything besides "Employee of the Month" type status

Advice to Senior ManagementWhat is the incentive for getting NEXT as an employee?

Former Employee – worked at Express LLC part-time for less than a year

ProsGreat on-site training in sales, customer service and even management. Great employee discounts (especially on extra discount weekends), decent pay and a sense of camaraderie among all workers.

ConsStingy management at times and a loud work environment. There are opportunities for advancement, but they are few and far between and usually only come after years of company employment.

New York, NY (US)

Current Employee – been working at Express LLC part-time for more than a year

ProsOne of the pros of working at Express as I said before are the individuals. Everyone is very welcoming and open to answering questions. The managers try to be understanding of the associates problems creating an open environment. I only work part-time so the hours change every week which is good because I would get bored of the same routine eventually.

ConsThe cons are that the managers can sometimes be a little unprofessional. There was a time when one of the managers was talking about different types of consumers by race and I thought it to be extremely inappropriate.

Also, the lunch breaks are ridiculous. You have to work 6 1/2 hours before you can get a HALF hour break. They will never give you a full hour, even if you work more than 7 hours. They will break up your break so that it equals an hour. For instance, you get 45 minutes, then a couple hours later they will give you a 15 minute break.

Lastly, the store hours. The store used to close at 9pm Monday-Saturday and 8pm on Sunday's. Now we close at 10pm Monday-Saturday and 9pm on Sunday's.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive your employees more lunch break time.

Close the store at a decent hour so we won't get home so late.
