Pros

You are allowed to figure out your own ideal balance between work and play. Hours are very flexible, time off is generous, work early or late as you prefer. Many work from home.

Cons

Poor direction. The last few years have seen projects released with no followup or maintenance, other projects restarted several times or cancelled close to release. There is no clear plan of attack for Yahoo's comeback. Subsequently we have lost almost all the "big name" web devs who used to be a selling point to incoming engineers.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a direction and stick with it. Don't plan and replan and replan, just execute and trust in the results.

    I worked at Yahoo full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Very high profile and lots of unique visitors per month means every move you make can have a huge impact; lots of untapped potential at the company; Santa Monica office is a great location if you move to the area

    Cons

    Company is very unstable; constant musical chairs in leadership and a lack of direction; lots of talent that is underutilized; no firm grasp of long-term goals as the company at least on the media side of the business focuses only on short-term gains.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I would recommend fundamentally restructuring the company, reducing the number of independent units, VP fiefdoms and layers of management; focusing on core businesses and offering substantive career opportunities to staff so that talented people don't feel that they have to leave the company to move ahead and so that there is incentive for people to try hard to succeed; also management should focus on long-term as well as short-term goals - and using the media unit to build its brand; career rewards and VP success should not be solely dependent on how much money is brought in each quarter by each unit without looking at how the company is building itself up for the future and building its brand; talented staff is under-utilized and new ideas should be encouraged (whether or not they can be immediately monetized).
