Former Employee - Marketing Specialist in Livonia, MI (US)

I worked at Valassis full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Co-workers (non-management) are helpful and all-around good people. Casual dress code. Starting vacation days are generous. Livonia building facilities offer many amenities.

Cons

Work/Life balance is non-existent. Unless you are a working mother, do not expect to leave at 5pm on a daily basis. Single or married individuals without children are left to handle the workload of their co-workers. You will work evening and weekends regardless of what you are told during the hiring process (sans overtime pay). Supervisors rarely have experience in the department they oversee and offer little help during stressful seasonal periods. Computer systems are dated and slow (most internal systems are dos based). Little opportunity for advancement; Raises are even more rare. Unless you are one of the "chosen" few, do not expect to move up the corporate ladder.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Supervisors and upper-management need to stop taking credit for their employee's hard work and ideas. Talk to your employees and ask for their honest opinions. Someone who does the job everyday can offer much more insight than an outside consultant who observes for less than a day. Raises and bonuses should not solely be based on goals set at the beginning of a year when variables constantly change; Understand most employees are doing the work for (2) people.

I have been working at Valassis full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good health benefits. A lot of vacation days for tenured employees and no set amount of sick days. Options available for flexible schedule. Managers work with employees who have to come in late or leave early due to life events, such as Dr. appointments. Work hard, play hard, fun environment.

    Cons

Managers are not well trained so they can't help associates. Employees who don't interact with clients give cross-functional partners a lot of push back. Most of my hurdles and struggles are from within. I have to jump through hoops to fulfill a client request. Cross training is poor, forcing associates to fake it till they make it....or give up. Promotions and raises should be based on performance, not how well you write up an evaluation or fill out paperwork or how much you suck up to your boss.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop focusing on making the company appear to be the best place to work and actually make it one. Listen to what associates have to say. Upgrade server capabilities. Train employees so they know what they are doing. Ensure the culture is the same no matter the location. Make advancement opportunities more readily available in remote offices. Spread the wealth so people outside of Livonia are recognized. Hold people more accountable.

I have been working at Valassis full-time

    Pros

-Benefits(Health, Vision, Dental), although shrinking as of 2013.
    -Causal dress
    -Company Outings
-Opportunity to work on projects that are beyond your usual responsibilities.
    -Big on promoting within.
-Most holidays off. Generous vacation time for longterm employees.

    Cons

-Management is overburdened with projects from the top.
-Less of a focus on generating revenue than meeting their project goals. For example, Valassis is a tough vender to do business with. This should be dealt with promptly rather than focusing on longterm goals such as diversity.
-Surpise! You have been volunteered to help-out a local charity. 4 to 5 hours of your work day is taken from you and you must make-up that lost time with unpaid overtime.
-Six 4 hour training sessions(in a 6 month period) on such boring topics as communication and time management. These sessions are filled with common sense info that Valassis buys from cheap trade schools. Surprise, you must make-up the lost time with unpaid overtime while clients are angry you were not available.
-Salary is average and it is repeated over and over that pay is within industry standards. HR, please stop wondering why employees are not energize. They are not paid enough.
-Outdated software and hardware. We're running Windows XP and Office 2003 in 2013!
-Not many job growth opportunities in the field offices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Focus on making Valassis the easiest vender to do business with.
-Return to basics! Less focus on vague issues like diversity.
-Reduce the amount of VPs. Someone gets promoted everyday to one of the 3 tiers of VP.
