    Pros

Good people to work with. Management tries to be balanced. Some people don't like the increased emphasis on using a software life cycle structure, but it's actually a good thing.

    Cons

Product marketing and exec management can't or don't always make the tough decisions on product direction.

    Advice to Management

Customer satisfaction and solutions drive this company. Yearly releases for the sake of pushing out features and "staying ahead of the competition" may not be the best strategy. Especially at the cost of product quality. Emphasize to engineering that products have to be easy to use and be designed with a end to end usability work flow. Often the products look like the UI and user processes are an after thought to the feature itself. To HR and exec management/board: when you roll out a change in policy, such as the transition to "non-accrued vacation", give the employees time to plan for it rather than springing on people after they can't do anything. Changing policy is fine, you have to do what you have to do.

    Pros

    - culture of excellence, quality - a lot of smart people - genuine commitment to innovation

    Cons

    - executives lack ability Inability to make tough decision; they allow competing projects to go on too long undermining eachother leading to a no-win situations. - hyper-visor / platform team have too much say / power: VMware claim they want to move "up the stack" into management software and new domains but efforts have been obstructed by senior, core teams who only have experience building operating systems and command line tools. - promises of technical career progression don't seem too promising: Sr Staff and above seem dominated by old-timers and acquirees; little potential for organic promotion - recent "re-focussing" and spinning-off of the "Pivotal Initiative" seems to be an admission the company is incapable of moving into new areas which is disheartening.

    Advice to Management

Be decisive and put an end to the Darwinian product development: choose to invest in something and get everybody behind it.
