Quality Internship With Intelligent Coworkers

Former Intern - Member of Technical Staff Intern in Palo Alto, CA (US)
Former Intern - Member of Technical Staff Intern in Palo Alto, CA (US)

I worked at VMware as an intern

Pros

Lots of very smart people
Good office space
On par with other Bay Area companies in terms of salaries and perks (somewhat)

Cons

Lots of politics at/above middle management, though hasn't affected engineering work as much
Slow and frustrating release/development cycle

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the politics and focus on innovation internally (in terms of development and agility) as opposed to bickering for position

I worked at VMware as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Intelligent people - staff engineers are pretty awesome, good compensation (for interns), good pantry.

    Cons

The nature of work varies from team to team - could be really interesting, could be really boring, no interaction with mentor/manager (personal experience - YMMV), no emphesis on KT. The company is growing at exponential rate and losing small company nature at the same rate. So your experience really vary from team to team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I guess I wasn't there long enough to give any advice but if you compare the company to Google/Facebook/Apple and expect to attract talent, you should match the compensation and benefits. Specially when you spoil the interns by paying them so much.

    Positive Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
