Pros

Intellectual community, neighborhood oriented, lots of opportunities, congenial co-workers, beautiful campus, ability to move to different positions on campus, great students

Cons

low pay, the neighborhood can be dicey, transportation options to campus are limited--depending on where you live, very academic and can be a little boring

Advice to Management

I noticed far too many disgruntled academics who never completed their Ph.D.'s in mid-management positions. Some are wonderful at their jobs, but others breed a lot of negativity/doom/gloom that doesn't reflect that university.

    Pros

Very family oriented. My manager is very understanding when I have to take off due to emergencies. My manager is very fair and doesn't micromanage. The company is easily accessible from major bus and train routes

    Cons

Hard to find parking. The University is not located in a very safe neighborhood. We often hear reports of assaults and robberies. There is a University side and a Hospital side. I would recommend applying for all jobs on the university side. The Hospital is a lot more restricted.

    Advice to Management

Raises greater than 3% would be greatly appreciated as well as lessening the time it takes to get a promotion approved.

    Pros

UC provides opportunities to work with many brilliant and inspiring people, including many from diverse backgrounds and from other countries. The university's name also carries a lot of weight- more so as you get farther away from Chicago. Campus is historic and beautiful.

    Cons

Inconvenient and sometimes dangerous location, constant turf wars, incompetent career administrators, no consequences for unethical behavior by managers and physicians, lack of pathways to advancement for most staff, culture of individual achievement, poor compensation, inadequate staff parking, most openings are only posted publicly as a formality.
Staff education benefits are laughable for a university.

    Advice to Management

Stop restructuring every two years, make salaries competitive, and address the nepotism issue.
The lack of advancement and education pathways for staff is disgraceful.
