I have been working at Ubisoft

Pros

A fun and dynamic environment. Many departments including marketing have wide breadth to be individuals in fulfilling their jobs. Generally evaluated on the results of your work with little to no micromanagement.

Cons

No consistency in the culture. Some departments can be overly strict and very structured, others can be very flat with no career plan definition at all. No matter what growth is limited as most recognition and job advancement goes through the Paris office. A superstar anywhere else will face a "wine glass" ceiling. You have to speak french fluently to be seen as influential. Also, the company isn't shy in firing people.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good look the organization and revisit the objectives of each department. Don't be afraid to make changes and cut head count.

    Pros

    - Great intranet to share knowledge
    - Some cool IPs

    Cons

    - Salary is way lower compared to same position in other companies or fields (although this seems to be a general problem to the games industry)
    - Canada studios get all the praise, investment and focus, while smaller studios get to work on some horrible IPs (aka Imagine and Petz lines)
    - It seems if you don't know french or doesn't have some french heritage, you will never make to top management positions
    - Top management insists that employees should make creative stuff when they are between projects, but they forget that most production guys are always in a project
    - Business and marketing people get bigger paychecks and work normal hours, while programmers, artists, designers and testers (the guys that really put the game together) make some crazy overtime

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Studio directors must understand they don't know anything about game design or art, and thus, stop interfering in the game designers and artists job
    - Let people from other nationalities raise to the top if they are really good. No use to keep old dinossaurs that have long lost sight about modern entertainment
    - Pay people an industry standard salary. You will notice that when money is not an issue, intelligent people get more creative (they don't need to thinking about their finances all the time)

    It's a great place to start a career on the Games industries.

    Cons

    Salaries are lower in comparison with the other companies salaries.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The management team should give a better treatment to the senior members of it's team. Many talented people leave ubisoft because of the lower salaries and lack of opportunities to grow on the company.
