I worked at Trader Joe's

Pros

Best reasons to work at TJ's is flexible hours, and decent pay for what you do great Part time job for students and people who want to work with little responsibility-other than showing up, cashiering and stocking. Easy going place to work.

Cons

The full-timers are manager's who for the most part are uneducated and got promoted based on doing being friends with the Captain or first mate. No formal training program for them it's a sink or swim baptism by fire management program. They shoul be more elective recruiting college grads who have taken courses in leadership, management, and human resources. They fail epically in that area

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Formalize a management training program-

Hard work but fun if you can handle the physical nature of the job.

I have been working at Trader Joe's

    Pros

They offer very good benefits if you maintain 29 hours a week. They offer very good products which attracts nice customers for the most part. If you work had and smart you will receive good raises every 6 months and if you really work hard you can have a nice career in management known as a "full timer".

    Cons

Can be very grueling work at times. Some store shifts start at 4AM and on the other side of the spectrum the last shift ends at 11PM. Also, it's retail so expect to work weekends and many holidays.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you work very hard and smart and show leadership type qualities then you can move up to "full time" which is another word for management at TJ's. It's not easy but if you are focused and listen to your manager it can happen and does happen. If you expect to cruise into management it will never happen. It is tough but well worth the effort.

I have been working at Trader Joe's

    Pros

Pay and benefits and 401 plan.

    Cons

Inconsistency with all levels of management. Some are ok at best, while others are horrible. Very rarely is there one that actually meets the standards of their income and title. Some in upper management really have absolutely no idea how the store runs day to day, often relying on others below them to make it all happen. When problems mount up over time, they are just transferred to another store and the cycle starts all over again....Of course work schedules in retail are terrible. Can be even worse at TJ's.Almost impossible to keep their employees healthy with such demanding work hours.Despite all this..I still work here.Shows how bad the economy is these days.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most upper management positions were filled when company was growing at a faster rate than it is now for example. Many of them got into these positions for simply being in right place at right time during TJ growth spurt.Majority of them are not qualified for these responsibilities and their $100,000 + salaries. Also most of them have no basic people skills or manangement ability. However there are the exceptions of course and I am always pleasantly surprised when this occurs.
