I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

helping & satisfying customers needs so they will come back to shop

Cons

unqualified management who like to constantly verbally threaten associates

Advice to ManagementAdvice

please screen your ASM's more before promoting. Some seem to be on a "power trip", and constantly try to intimidate both male & female associates.

    Current Employee - Department Supervisor
    Current Employee - Department Supervisor

I have been working at The Home Depot full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Health benefits/insurance for both FT & PT employees, 401k, stock purchase program, vacation & sick pay, success sharing (bonus) payouts

The people are generally great to work with. You have a lot of customer interaction and can learn a tremendous amount of home improvement projects both from job training and customers themselves. A company that has allowed me to keep my job and position as I've relocated across the country 3 times over the past 11 years.

    Cons

Things change frequently: from seasonal displays to the way "we do things here".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Department Supervisors do loads of work and rarely see recognition. Some nice "kudos" and rewards/recognition should really be implemented to some of the hardest working employees in the corporation. Unfortunately, it is the Store Managers who are rewarded for others' hard work.

Former Employee - Senior Logistics Analyst in Atlanta, GA (US)

I worked at The Home Depot full-time

    Pros

    - On-site facilities are great - gym, dry cleaning, pharmacy, ATMs, cafeteria
    - They hire a lot of young people. Median age seems to be in the early 30s in non-executive-level positions
    - It can be a fun environment depending on the people you work with
    - You do get a lot of good experience
    - They always seem to be hiring new positions
    - Stock price has been going up!

    Cons

    - Very reactionary retail environment
    - Not many paid holidays so you have to take a vacation day on the Friday after Thanksgiving (or you can work Black Friday at the stores... which sounds like nightmare)
    - Vacation time is standard 2 weeks for first 5 years of employment
    - Very Blackberry-centered and you are expected to answer emails outside of working hours
    - Lots of meetings
    - There isn't a process for internal promotion
