Former Employee - Software Engineer Intern in Mountain View, CA (US)

I worked at Symantec full-time (less than an year)

Pros

Ethics driven Company
As an intern, I didn't find any politics, everybody was nice and helpful
Good pay and nice cafe

Cons

Not everybody is smart (some people are just going along because they have been at the company long)
Older workforce in general makes it less attractive for new interns and new hires

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more young people, and make changes fast (older workforce although good, is still resistant to change...just my impression though)

I worked at Symantec full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Large company and will be here for a long time. Good benefits. Depending on the group you are with, work/life balance can be good - but that is not constant across all teams. Good place for entry level people to get a start and learn.

    Cons

Large company lacking focus and direction, or I should say focus and direction seem to change each year. Upper management's main focus is just to cut costs of developing and supporting software without any concerns of impact to quality and customers. They also do a lot of employee surveys on what needs to be fixed, then upper management puts out a lot of "we hear you", but then do nothing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on building quality products and customer satisfaction will improve.

Decent engineering skills suffocated by incompetent management.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Compensation and benefits are pretty good.
    Good work/personal life balance.
Not a hard or stressful place to work.
Ok if you mostly want a paycheck and just surviving satisfies your goals.

    Cons

Like many large and relatively old companies, this one has been thoroughly taken over by management that can't compete in the industry. There is a dual career path in theory but in practice if you aren't a manager you will find yourself ignored at the whim of management that often doesn't have a clue. If living Bonjour Laziness is your thing, this is the place for you. If you are primarily technical, have real talent, and have any kind of ambition to make a difference, there are much better place to go, unless perhaps you want an easy spell while collecting a paycheck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nothing less than a wholesale reformulation of the corporate culture can arrest this company's gradual slide into irrelevance.
