Pros

learning about/ handling MOST of the animals

Cons

low pay, variable hours, annoying customers, frequently scheduled to work in dept. alone (basically getting paid barely above min. wage to do the work of 2-3 people and expected to give excellent customer service at the same time), hamsters

Advice to ManagementAdvice

start petcare/specialty out at a higher rate. the amount of physical labor required (weekly bedding changes/ scrubbing tanks/ feeding+ watering all animals in store/ administering medications etc...) to do the job on top of having to learn about not only all the animals in the store plus the products/habitats for them as well is way too much for min. wage and crappy hours.

    Pros

    Employees genuinely care about pets. Good work life balance. The office is empty after 5pm.

    Cons

    Poor leadership at the Director and Vice President levels. Very few growth opportunities below the Vice President level. Senior leadership places very little value on education.

    Place a larger emphasis on education and career advancement.

    Pros

    Competitive benefits, great industry with lots of heart, strong foundation for fair wage earning, incentives for success

    Cons

    Difficult to grow individually, weak management structure that yields low results shy of conflict resolution, lack of support and encouragement/tendency to focus on obstacles

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Improvement is needed throughout this industry. The constant barrage of restrictions and additional safety measures always seem well-intended, but rarely are presented in a timely or kind way. There is a need for a field position in the salon, whether it is one person for the whole company, or one per region. I would love to see a position created for this company that allowed someone to play the 'fixer' by visiting salons and improving their operations and safety awareness.
