    I worked at Paychex

    Pros

-Work with clients representing variety of different industries
-Training (both for internal employees and clients)
-safety service (staff who backs this up is extremely knowledgable and helpful to both HR and clients)
-Support from internal partners (payroll, health and benefits, 401k/FSA and WC team in NY)
-Position suitable for a junior-level HR person

    Cons

-The amount of clients you will be expected to support (depending on your assigned territory) will most likely be disproportionate to your compensation. Base salary is extremely low..maybe 65-70k now? Expect the annual increase to be about 3-4%. For a bonus, you are looking at maybe $1600.
-You will be reminded constantly from operations and sales to retain current clients, upsell current clients, and attract new business--without any financial incentives. If you are lucky, you may get a $25 gift card from a sales rep or be treated to lunch by the regional HR person.
-Clients are difficult and it's important at the end of the day to have a manager who supports you and encourages you (despite the low compensation) to stay motivated and to make the job work for you. The Area Mgr role is hit or miss depending on your office location. The best managers are the ones who started out as generalists at Paychex because they know the job and the challenges it brings. The good ones are also those that have a strong partnership with sales where there is a mutual respect which trickles down to how the generalists will be treated.
-If you want to become a manager, you may need to look elsewhere. Mgmt openings don't happen that often and the selection process is very political. Your best bet is to put in a few years and use it as a stepping stone to a better position where you will be compensated accordingly.
-The sales culture is very "bait and switch." They are under tremendous pressure to meet quota and the turnover for sales is extremely high. Expect to be putting out fires with clients as they were given unreasonable expectations/promises from the sales reps.
-HR Solutions is not cheap. About 70% of the clients on the service should not be, but again that goes back to sales. With this cost comes unreasonable demands that are placed on the HR person. Depending on your territory, you may be lucky and get only 35 clients. Or, you may have over 50. You are not going to be able to be every clients "offsite HR business partner." It's not humanly possible unless you clone yourself or resolve to spend 8 hrs a day in your car and late nights. You aren't compensated based on the number of clients you support.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's a tough job with so many internal/external "customers." It is up to mgmt to make sure their hr people are happy and motivated so that they can deliver good service to their clients.
