I worked at Northrop Grumman full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

Plenty of training. Travel if you need it. Generous benefit package. Excellent set of colleagues.

Cons

Government contractor subject to an extra layer of government controls and red tape.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

You don't always have to sell the gold plated custom Cadillac. Sometimes the customer wants a Chevy S10. You have to resist government tendency to keep changing the scope of projects under construction. While you will make more money on change orders, in the long run endemic cost overruns destroy political support for funding the programs.

I have been working at Northrop Grumman full-time

    Pros

Good benefits; lots of opportunities to work on pretty cool stuff that benefits the US military (and others)! If you're willing to relocate, NG has lots of opportunities across the company, and seems to do a good job of enabling employees to move to a new job/place.

    Cons

    - As a defense contractor, NG follows the highs and lows of defense work -- right now defense is shrinking, as seen by lots of defense contractors (Lockheed Martin, NG, Raytheon, etc.) having layoffs.
    - If you want to work on cool commercial stuff, a defense contractor isn't the place.
    - For software developers, not a lot of decent process in place across the company, nor decent training company-wide for developers.
