I have been working at Marriott Vacation Club

Pros

Very large, well respected company that treats employees fairly. The product is far above average for the industry. Employees are treated with dignity and respect and hard work is generally acknowledged. Individuals are able to make a difference with regards to ideas and input.

Cons

Long hours, not much personal life, LOW salary.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time with the people that are in contact with customers on a daily basis. These are the people that truly know what is going on at a given moment. Sometimes business as usual is not good. Get out and experience it hands on. This is how you truly connect with customers.

    Pros

Can be very easy work in the right position. Mine, for instance, was very simple and not all that demanding but you did have to want to do it. As an activities coordinator, you are responsible for leading and organizing all activities and games at the resort, as well as coming up with ideas for potential new ones to add to the schedule. Some of the most fun times I've ever had at work, ever. There was also plenty of downtime in between various activities. Others may have found it to be a little dull, but I didn't mind one bit.

    Cons

If you are not a people person this would not be the right fit for you. You will have almost constant interaction with guests and all employees are expected to smile and greet everyone they see or pass while walking. This can be taxing after a while, always having to be "up" and not being able to have a bad day where you just ignore everyone and do your own thing. Also some of the guests, and in this case, their children can be quite difficult to deal with at times, many were constantly looking for free items, or getting things comped just because, and they will complain to get what they want.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to actually manage, going through a "training course" and a book doesn't make people who have been followers all their lives into leaders. Try promoting those who are actually leaders by nature instead of just promoting those who have been there the longest time.

Marriott no longer values associates, only the bottom line.

    Pros

Lots of training, and great working at a resort where you are dealing with "owners" instead of renters.

    Cons

Marriott is changed their Associate Relations for the worse. Marriott's policy was "if you take care of your associates, they will take care of your guests." That is no longer the case. With the current economy all celebrations and any money spent as a "thank you" has stopped. Speaking with friends still with Marriott, it isn't coming back in 2009 either.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At the corporate level the Senior Managers are arrogant and rude. At the site level they were very friendly, though some were uneducated when it came to technology and the changes of the younger upcoming workforce.
