I worked at Johnson & Johnson

Pros

JNJ offers a great career path within a respected company and category - namely healthcare. Multinational opportunities are at large.
Likewise, JNJ has a strong track record of innovation - allowing you to be at the forefront on new consumer insights and solutions.

Cons

Whereas the Credo is at the heart of leadership values at JNJ - on paper, these values are not always rigidly demanded of senior management to succeed. Allowing leaders to progress within the organisation while blatantly ignoring respect for the employee and for the customer - is happening. As a result, poor role models are emerging for employees to aspire towards.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

It might be prudent to take a good look at direct employee feedback for each people leader, no matter how senior - and reasses if the results (shareholder metrics) do indeed outweight the first Credo responsibilities....

I have been working at Johnson & Johnson

    Pros

People recognize the name, which makes it a little easier to publish papers and deliver talks at conferences. The pay is ok, not spectacular but reasonable. Cubes and facilities are clean and air-conditioned. Adequate number of urinals in mens bathroom.

    Cons

There is too much headcount turnover and managerial promotions/reorganizations to accomplish long term research projects in a reasonably sane manner. The performance review rating system is ridiculous with too many gradations. Too few people doing work requested by managers/directors/VPs etc. Coworkers can be aggressive competitors at times, making the concept of "team" moot.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

"Walk the talk" when supporting R&D by being aggressive and taking that risk. Outsourcing work is not taking a risk. New products that help the doctor or patient when they involve extraordinary investment and time without immediate payoff is taking a risk.

    Pros

    Great work/life balance
    Great staff
Great place to learn and gain experience

    Cons

    Poor management
    Lack of consistent leadership
Yearly reorganizations give the impression of no clear goals or vision for the company
    Poor compensation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reinstate the Credo survey and actually address the concerns of the employees instead of providing lip service.
