Current Employee - Electrical Engineer in Jacksonville, FL (US)

I have been working at JEA full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Very family oriented atmosphere with an excellent pension plan. Easy to balance out life and work due to the flexible hours. A lot of good people who look to work there their entire career. Not too stressful as long as you do your job. Excellent place to work for.

Cons

May take a while for a raises and promotions. People hired from the outside may be brought in at a higher pay than someone whose been there a lot longer with a lot more experience.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

For some managers - Do not micromanage your employees. Treat them as professionals giving them the benefit of the doubt to be able to produce at their position.

Former Employee - Front Line Management in Jacksonville, FL (US)

I worked at JEA full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great rank and file staff, very competent and really care about providing effective and efficient service to the customers. Fair pay and benefits. A year ago, my review would have been much more positive so I hope things improve for the employees and customers.

    Cons

The new executive leadership team has made some questionable decisions that may create an atmosphere that will bring very high rates to the customers. It does not appear that the top executive leadership team understands the core business or what it takes to lead the business. The most qualified leaders are ignored or removed and management jobs are not competitively filled so advancement is very difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The appointed board should thoroughly review the leadership’s direction and pay attention to the company metrics. The company operational metrics will continue to slip unless there are some immidiate changes.

I worked at JEA full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Stability as an employer,
    Union protection,
    Job promotions exist,
Recognized by local citizens as a good paying employer,
Once hired there are years of internal professional development,
Easy to build your credit locally after becoming an employee,
Often given opportunities as a fulltime employee to increase certifications and licenses in your specific field, at the company’s expense,
A tuition reimbursement program available for permanent employees at the company’s expense.

    Cons

Internal and external political challenges as a government organization
The multiple unions often make it easier on the employees to say certain job duties are not in their job requirements
Who you eat lunch with often defines who gets promoted
A strict chain of command and division between management and non-management in organizational communications
The annual workplace survey (internal tool) carries much weight in how management is evaluated
Diversity in hiring locals lacks when contracting companies (on the property) are allowed to hire temp employees who often become JEA permanent employees
Bonuses are distributed from set pools different for management and non-management
Certain employees in the call center tend to be treated as “field slaves”
Hurricane season requires all hands on deck…

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work in tandem with the JEA Board to improve the community JEA serves to become the best utility provider in the country
Management and employees take your blinders off. Recognize that the organization provides a service to the community and the community is not providing a service to JEA management and employees vis-a-vis $$$.
