Rated as one of the top 100 Canadian employers until 2006. Off the list since 2007. Coincidence? I think not.

I have been working at IBM

Pros

Very competitive salary in the Toronto / Ontario region
Flexible work arrangements - flex hours, working at home
IBM still viewed highly in the industry - looks good on the resume

Cons

Layers of management and bureaucracy to wade through, wasting your time from doing your actual work
Little to no organic innovation
Rewards those who play the political game and position themselves well, rather than those who consistently output quality work
50-55 hour weeks are the norm, with 60-65 crunch weeks often enforced, for weeks and months at a time

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Enable and empower your employees to make decisions, take calculated risks, and innovate. Micromanaging them to the tiniest detail wastes everyone's time and doesn't utilize people's skills to the fullest.

I have been working at IBM

    Pros

    - very flexible workplace / work from home opportunity

    Cons

    - Low pay
    - Low growth
    - Even with experience, benefits do not grow, sometimes even decreases

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

match the pay with the market, otherwise the next generation will not stay long term as the older generation did

    I worked at IBM

    Pros

The company name carries some weight anywhere. The pay rate rate was not too shabby and all extra- and over-time was compensated. Parking was provided and the facilities were decent.

    Cons

A contract comes with no benefits, not even paid vacation, and you are forced to work holidays. Lots of management layers allow for some confusion and inefficiency. Management wasn't top of the line, but I've seen worse. Help desk workers are usually seen and referred to as "bodies" and are only as good as their phone statistics. Overall a mediocre job...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At least pretend you care about your help desk "bodies"
