I have been working at Huron Consulting Group

    Pros

Huron's healthcare practice provides a lot of training which is extremely helpful when entering healthcare consulting without previous industry experience. Until recently, they also did a great job of creating a fairly vibrant culture through the use of twice yearly company conferences (since pared down to once yearly).

If you work in the "field", opportunities for advancement are great, though one could argue this owes largely to the attrition rate inherent to consulting.

Employees are typically pretty fun to work with, which is helpful when you are spending 8+ months on engagements.

    Cons

Neither salary nor variable pay are particularly great for the industry. It is not uncommon for folks to jump to a competitor for a 15-20% bump which they then maintain relative to Huron employees.

While the CEO turnover a few years back was a good thing, the healthcare practice leadership has changed for the worse in my opinion. Several wonderful and influential MDs have left as a result.

Vacation can be difficult to schedule as it can be hard for some managers to forecast busy periods effectively.

All managers are not created equal, though this is to be expected anywhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on your people as much as you focus on the client. Lack of retention is a huge issue which you have been paying lip service to for several years with little to no change. People are leaving for reasons which you do have some control over (low pay, work/life balance, etc.).
